Speaker 1: Natural sweeteners are wonderful option if you want to get away from using
high fructose corn syrup. However, one of the natural sweeteners, agave, is naturally
high in fructose, so I would say use that in moderation. My friend Linn Patrick says,
"Don't do more than a tablespoon a day." Now, if you want to look at something called stevia,
that's probably the ideal sweetener. Not everybody tolerates it well, but it's 300 times sweeter
than sugar and it's a natural herbal compound that does not spike blood sugar at all.
Maple syrup and honey are other alternatives. We love to use maple syrup and honey in our
desserts at home, but we use fruit commonly. If you want to sweeten a smoothie, if you
want to sweeten an ice cream, use fruit. The natural fruit not only has a little bit of
fructose, but it has some fibers as well and beneficial plant chemicals that protect you
from damage.
