You think that someone has defamed you because they're going around your neighborhood telling
others what a lousy guy you are, what a lousy this or that you are, and so you want to know
what your rights are. Hello, I'm Robert Todd and I'm here to answer the question how to
sue for defamation of character. Well to begin with you want to be sure to know what your
particular state laws are with regard to defamation of character. This is going to vary from state
to state. But generally speaking, there are two types of defamation. There is slander,
which is the verbal or spoken type of defamation, and there is the libel, L I B E L, which is
the written type of defamation. And what is defamation? Basically someone making a false
statement about you to a third person and this making of the false statement causes
you harm. Your reputation is ruined, your ability to engage in your occupation is affected
in an adverse way, and therefore is causing you damage. But remember, this is an area
where the first amendment and freedom of speech gets involved, it's very complex. If you don't
know what you're doing, don't try to do this yourself. Hire a lawyer that specializes in
this area of law. Not just any lawyer, but a lawyer that specializes in this area of
the law. I'm Robert Todd and thank you for watching.
