The Sutter Health Network has a long history in northern
California.
Some of our care centers date back to the Gold Rush.
Today, we continue to provide health care to millions of
patients every year.
We're investing billions of dollars in new services and
facilities, and in other quality care advancements.
As a not-for-profit organization, we don't answer
to shareholders.
Instead, we put our earnings back into care and services
for the benefit of our patients and communities.
In 2012 alone, we invested nearly $800 million in
community benefit and free care to patients who couldn't
afford to pay.
You guys helped us open up Oak Park; the county shut down
that clinic.
And our other hospital partners have come in, in part
because you lead the way.
We have one of the largest hospital building programs in
northern California.
Over the past 10 years, we've invested more than $4.5
billion to build, replace and improve hospitals, clinics and
care centers.
That translates into creating or sustaining more than
130,000 construction-related jobs, even during the recent
economic downturn.
We also invest our earnings in cutting-edge technologies that
help make our high-quality care even safer for patients.
I think part of that has to do with the implementation of the
electronic health record.
We all have access to view the information that we need to
view, at that time, in order to have the conversations and
progress the patient and get them the care that they need.
And we invest in our employees, offering
competitive wages, benefits and a
fully-funded pension plan.
Saving-wise, Sutter Health's pension plan has really helped
my husband and I to have a comfortable life.
I wouldn't have been able to retire if I didn't have it.
Like any family, it's important that our network
earn more than it spends every year so that we have enough
money to meet the growing and changing health care needs of
our patients and communities.
At the same time, we're rethinking and reinventing how
we deliver our high-quality care so it's more consistent
and efficient, and so patients can afford to choose us.
If I didn't recieve the really good care I had at Sutter
Health, I think I'd still be trying to recover mentality
and physically.
They care so much for you not (only) as a patient, but as a
human being.
So much kindness just overflows.
It's just really amazing.
