Tenancy deposit schemes have been introduced to help to resolve issues with the return
of deposits at the end of a tenancy. Disagreements often arise when tenants don't get their
deposits back from their landlord or tenants don't pay the last month's rent.
This should be avoided in future as all tenants of private landlords will have their deposits
registered with an approved tenancy deposit scheme. The deposit will be held by an independent
scheme instead, and not by your landlord. At the end of your tenancy your landlord will
have to apply to the scheme to have your deposit returned. Your landlord may request deductions,
for example, to cover damage. If you agree with the deductions you'll get your deposit
back from the scheme. If you can't reach an agreement you can
use the free dispute resolution service offered by the scheme provider.
Check Shelter's Scotland's get advice page on tenancy deposit schemes for more information
on exactly when your landlord needs to register your deposit.
