In the 20th century, we experienced many technologies as they develope.
Cars, Airplanes in the early 1900's
80's computer, and internet after that.
All this enormous science technology has happened in the 20th century.
All this technology will combine in the 21th century and come out in a form called 'Robot'
Bill gates, as you all know
in the bases of his last 30-40 years
later on our generation
will be a 'Robots innovation age'
The reason was in the experience of making Microsoft
For example, 70's was a beginning period
Next was Growing period
And its currently on matured period.
He sees
That robot is in the beginning period.
So It's a start for robots.
The message I'm giving you now,
has this propositionm that
I'm simply here to give you that proposition.
your generation has to finish it
Also this robot
is quite familiar because of movies,
but also, is highly expected to perform in the future
If you see the origin
In greek mythology there's, doll robot that draws and writes
In japan, there's a doll that carries teas
So they all say that they 'we are the origin of robots'
But it's not true.
Robots,
is defined by the International Federation of Robot
that we call robots
which is able of 'automatic control'

It's about not harming humans.
But now, robot in this age
kills people in war

I think this is a burden that you should bare.

more than 300 robot is working.
Such as painting for example
this is very harmful to human body,
but instead of us robots are doing it.
All your cell phone's semiconductor
is all made by robots.
But this industrial robots,
our country is doing a pretty good job.
But when you bring this robot into your house and living
You call that 'service robots'
And this has so much potential that
its pretty obvious that it'll bring revolution in 21th centuary.
..at least experts expect it that way.
Industrial robots,
just worts in patterns
No complaints, jusst work 24 hours straight
This intellectal robots,
Some of you may have robot cleaner in your home.
The robot sweeps through floors and hits on the wall
Then, although it may not realize that its a wall,
It recognizes as an obstical and get around it.
Such as this, intellectial and moving robots
we call 'intellectual robot'
And this will come into our lives ina very short time
..that'll be a huge message.
The industriall robots
just need motor and a simple program
But this, requires, intellegence, sensor, drive
all kinds of studies and different divisions are needed.

that 21th centuary requires.
So if you look at the robot industry in a global view,

George Devol in 1954 made it
and started to make it into a business
but because there were too much labor force that time in America,
robot wasn't needed.
..if you put robots, labor force decreases.
And this goes to Japan.
Kawasaka Bought the licence in 1969
And Japan began to invest on the whole robot industry.
So in the 1980, 50% of the industrial robot in the world
Were 'made in Japan' and became the worlds top.
It all started in America,
Americal usually don't interfere in small business
So for the milltary robot industry,

this is regarded as the worlds best.
When America's robot experts visit korea
they said that korea is in the 3rd place,
but I don't think 3rd or 4th place matters.
If you look in the current robot market,
Density, for example, robots per 10,000people
is on the 3rd place in the world.
So industry robot is doing a good job in korea,
More than 260 companies stood up again after the IMF crisis,
And the industry is looking up to 1trillion won.
In the past 2 government
Robots has officially became the power sorce in Korea
National vision is
To be in the 3rd place in intellectual robot technology.
And I think this is a job for all of you
Qhy do we need these intellectual robots?
Computer and IT is developed enough.
But if you look in the societies view and think
When I was young, Most of families had 6 or more kids
But now, Korea's birth rate is the lowest in OECD
1.24 per Couple
Not 2 but 1.24 baby
On the other hand aging population is increasing rapidly
In these times, technology can do 'Robots'
Thats the governments thought at least..
So this technology can help education, elderly, disabled, housework.
Entertainment, leisure, and other various kind of stuffs
The first commercialized robot is
an robot made in company named I-robot, established by MIT students
called Roomba, cleaning robot.
This was too expensive for Koreas mall at that time because it was over 2million won
So small business made this 4hundred thousand won.
The level was almost the same
It is still a problem that its too expensive,
But it'll get cheaper when it gets popular
Cars were the same you know
It was even slower than horses
Before I came to UNIST, I worked in Artificial intellegence robot center in POSTECH
There, with the window that we made,
It can clean floors
But window is the hard part considering Koreas apartment cultures
And next
We made another robot that cleans big water reservoir
Intellectual robots can be used for disabled
You should also read the book called "body malfunction of the five senses"
He had no hands or legs but very cheerfully
Working as a teacher
And this is the work of mobile robot
And also a robot for the elderly
In May, one student who is disabled in the lower half of the body
There is this proffesor 'Hajimabizar'
In California University
It's a part when he gets his diploma by making robot
Next is artificial leg for the disabled
This is an artificial arm that I made back in POSTECH
Next is military robot
America is already making many military robots
Such as 'predetor' which is making great contribution without pilots
Our laboratory is also making military robots ever since 2005
It was the first task ever asked for the national military

That we call 'wearing robot'
It was first made in UC berkeley
For the army, this robot can make people hold heavy stuffs
So its used by our military and Japan also
Next, as you know is 'space, deep sea'
this robot is exploring mars currently
And fish Robot.

So fish study is very increasing
This is undersea robot that our lab made
Next, technology by mimicing live insects or living things
Thats starting to regarded as an division
That we call Biomimedic technology
And insect robot is working
Just 2 hours ago, I saw it work as a demo, in UNIST
Unnfortunatly i cannot show it to you
Next, Humanoid, that most of you already know
Humanoid, Asimo that Honda has made for 10 year effort
Next Hubo, koreas humanoid came out
And this is 'HwaRang' in our laboratory.

The thing I want to say
is that this robot is working for a various fields.
This is Davinci, which is the only approved robot in america
Funny thing is, that korea's severance has the most surgery in terms of number
This is, nursing assistant robot that we are currently working on
Nurses has many work to do, pills, shots, taking temperature
So its hard to do a nursing job
So we made a nursing robot to help that
Robots diagnose, and check the body temperature and send it to the station
And not only this big roots that you have seen
Micro and Nano robots has came out
This pill sized robot goes to the bowel and comes out back
It started in Israel, but its already commercialized in Korea
So the message that I want to tell you guys
is that Robot is in the beginning
And its future is on your shoulders
