Summer Boost is a reading program that the purpose of the program is to mitigate summer
reading loss that research shows occurs for kids but especially kids that are in high
poverty areas. So the research shows that most kids from a low socio economic status
lose about 3 months of reading and instruction during the summer time so when you think about
the cumulative effect of that by the time these kids start 3rd grade many of them could
be up to a year behind in reading. My name is Amber and I really like it here
at JBA and at Summer Boost. It's a lot of fun and we're learning at the same time. Right
now we're learning about growing food and dance and we're reading a lot of good books
and it's just really great here and I would never want to be anywhere else.
This is not a remedial program, this is a summer boost and we're calling it a boost
program because we're actually using the curriculum for the next school year so 2nd graders are
getting a 3rd grade curriculum, 4th grade getting a 5th grade curriculum and so on.
Anytime you do a collaboration and summer boost is definitely a collaboration, it has
to be a win win for all partners and I believe summer boost is an example of a program that's
a win for our UofL students who get to participate and learn in it for the teachers here at Atkinson,
but most importantly for the kids that are participating and I think whatever we do,
we need to make sure that the kids are at the center of what we're doing.
