Yesterday I went through my bookcase to see what would be the next book I was going to
read when I suddenly realised, you may have seen my book case [I made a video about it
:p] but that is not the same! Because all the books I have in here have a story [no,
not just because they are books!:p] and I think that they actually say a lot about who
I am. So I thought I'd take you through my bookcase again and tell you some of those
stories that come with my books. So here is a whole series that I have only read this
year and I can remember so well that when I finished part one I immediately went to
the bookstore to see if they had part 2 and now I ended up with completely different editions
but I don't really care because it's such a great symbol for how bad I needed to continue
with this story and all the excitement and anticipation I had and it was so awesome.
These 2 books represent my trip to Paris earlier this year. The left one I bought specifically
to read there, because it is set in Paris and the right one I bought in Paris, in Shakespeare
& company, look! The two books I bought when I was in New York City this summer and they
were both awesome. Both Shakespeare and Company and the Strand became some of my favorite
bookstores. This one is from a Nerdfighter meeting, because John's Dutch publisher invited
us to talk about the book's marketing and it also gave us the opportunity to buy the
Dutch translation. Btw, I also own the English version. And the audio book. 2012 will always
be the year of the fault in our stars, or at least partially, because I read both the
dutch and the English version several times. It was also the year I met John Green for
the first time! These are two books my sister gave to me. I read them both this year, but
this one was a gift for my birthday this year, whereas this one was a gift last year. It
just took me a long time to read. My sister is awesome and she really knows what I like,
so... thank you :) This one was a gift from my other sister. This one I bought in the
American Book Center in Amsterdam when I was there for the first time. I was there together
with Lidewij en Sanne (van booksandquills) I had never been there and it turned out to
be an amazing store. This book represents my discovery of the most awesome bookstore
in my town where I go a lot now. It is not, what some may expect the Selexyz in Maastricht,
which is gorgeous [seriously, google it, it is amazing] but it's 'de Tribune'. When I
entered I asked the man who worked there for a book about the Arthurian Legends and he
knew so many just by heart which was so awesome and the store is so cool, and while the book
isn't that great (I have been reading it for a really long time and only got this far)
it was still worth it because it was one of the best discoveries of the year. Another
book I haven't read yet is this one; the tempest by Robert Davis but I got it because it is
set in Kingston which is the Canadian city I went to for my semester abroad. If I had
to choose one book that changed my life it's this one. I got it when I was 11 and I have
never read a book as often as I read this one. When I got it I literally started it
again as soon as I finished it and when I finally got part two I read them together
over and over again and I didn't read anything but Harry Potter for a year. I still read
it every year and it's the most important book that I own. *hugs* This is a book I discovered
in 2006 in my school library before I even knew the vlogbrothers existed. Which technically
they didn't at that time. I am still a big fan of John Green and when I met him earlier
this year he signed it and it says: to Lianne, thanks for sticking all these years and yes...
that's really cool. This book I bought a really long time ago at the Slechte in Utrecht [with
my first real boyfriend btw] for those of you who never went there, de Slechte in Utrecht
is an amazing store; so many stories and nooks and little paths and stairs. I wrote a book
report about this one in high school. This book I bought in the thrift store in Maastricht
and it's basically the reason I still go there really often. I bought this for 1,50 and it
is amazing. I became a really big fan of this writer (Johnathan Safran Foer) and it started
these treasure hunts which I love! This might be the most expensive book I own, because
I lost it when I moved and therefore I couldn't return it to the library which resulted in
a €60,- fine or something. Aside from that it's a great book and I reread it several
times however it will take a while before I got my money's worth out of this one. I
own the whole trilogy of North and South. I got these after my ex boyfriend introduced
me to the tv show and we were living together at the time and it took me forever to finish
them all, reading before we went to bed and yeah... I don't know... memories and stuff...
This book I read, or bought, because I loved the movie so much. The book and the movie
always remind the of the first time I saw the movie when me and my high school friends
were huge fans of Johnny Depp. And chocolate, so it was a win-win situation. The next book
is by Marianne Frederikson, the Deluge. I only own one of her books, but I am such a
big fan of this writer; I have read all her books, most of them several times, but most
were from the library. I remember that you could take a maximum of 5 books and I would
just rent 5 of hers. I'd love to collect all of them so can look all nice on my shelves.
This book; the 3 musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, I read when I was on vacation with some of
my friends in Rimini, Italy. And it was the most terrible young person vacation I have
ever had, but every day on the beach I was working through this enormous book which I
loved. I finished it and read the memoirs of Casanova afterwards so yay. The next book
is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, and I bough this one when I was in the states, at
a Barnes and Nobles and this is one of the books I read when I was backpacking on the
East Coast. The next one is the hobbit and I bought it at my favorite bookstore in Canada.
I already had read the Lord of the Rings, but not the Hobbit and I don't know why because
it is so amazing! I reread it like 5 times since then. This was a gift for my 16th birthday
and I still like it actually. It a combination of books and all the stereotypical girly stuff
that I also like :) This is another great book I found at the thrift store by Alain
de Botton and it made me realize again how much I like philosophy. I never completely
read this book as you might be able to imagine but it was only 5 euros! I bought it at 'de
Slechte' in Veenendaal and when I was buying it there were these two old guys at the register
complaining how today's youth never read to great books anymore and there faces when I
came to pay for this book were so funny! I will always remember them because it was so
hilarious. And last but not least: This one! I also use it as a tripod at the moment but
it's my bible and I got it for my 18th birthday. I once read the entire bible, but that wasn't
this version. But when I need to look something up or something I always use this one. This
video was basically to show you that books are not just books to me. I read them, which
I love to do, but there is so much more to them. Most of them represent a memory which
is why I like rereading them so much and to keep them and just look at them once in a
while. Do you feel the same about your books or do you have a completely different approach?
Please let me know in the comments and I will see you again soon for my overview of October!
Bye!
