I am Dr. Patty Rhynders and I am the Program Director for the Bachelor of Science in Health
Sciences program. I am a health educator. I got my Bachelor's degree at the State University
of New York specializing in community health education, and then moved on to California
and graduated from CalState Long Beach with a Master's in Public Health, and then moved
moved to Texas and got my PhD at Texas Woman's University in Health Studies for Higher Education
specializing in curriculum development and teaching health studies at the college level.
I chose Trident after doing a lot of research and looking at our course development style,
the learning platform, the case based and essay based format of learning that really
helps develop critical thinking as opposed to simply memorizing information for a test.
My research is focused on health communication and in particular I do research in consulting
with the National Hemophilia Foundation.
They have a program that's funded by the US Centers for Disease Control, trying to raise
awareness of bleeding disorders that affect women. When people think about bleeding disorders,
they think primarily of hemophilia that affect primarily young men, but there are bleeding
disorders that also affect women and can cause serious complications during ***,
child birth, surgery, or after injury, and we have done a lot of research in determining
which type of health communication is more likely to motivate a young woman who has symptoms
to than seek care and treatment and what we've found is the messages that are based on what
the woman would gain by seeking care such as improved quality of life, more predictable
theory is less risk of miscarriage or complications in childbirth are more persuasive than the
traditional fear based messages that would say something like, if you don't get treated
you could bleed to death.
So it's been very rewarding working with these young women and really being able to help
change their lives and improve their quality of live.
