I'm Aviva Abramovsky.
I'm the new Executive Director for Syracuse University's LL.M. program.
This is a masters geared towards foreign-trained lawyers who want to come to the United States
to study American law.
What I think is interesting and somewhat unique about the LL.M. curriculum here at Syracuse
University is that, for the majority of the students' required 24 credits, they can choose
from all of the course offerings here at the law school.
There are only two required courses. One is in an introduction to American law and legal
studies. The other required course is a writing class for international students. That course
I'm particularly excited about, because it gives students the opportunity to work with
American types of motions and papers, and have a real, practical experience in drafting.
Enrollment in the Syracuse LL.M. program is open to anyone who is either licensed as a
lawyer in their home jurisdiction who who has a first degree in law in their country.
We're interested in people from all different kinds of backgrounds, those with experience
in litigation, in business, in corporate work, or who have worked in the government, as a
judge or law clerk. The real hope is that we gather together a group of people here
at Syracuse University in an interesting and diverse combination of backgrounds.
The LL.M. program here is what we like to call, "self-directed." This allows the students
to choose amongst the courses that most suit their own legal education ambitions. They
can choose to specialize in corporate law, in American business law, in intellectual
property, or amongst a variety of other types of specialized programs offered here at the
university.
The ability to choose your own specialization means that we're really looking for people
with a diverse background and interest. Those people with experience in different areas
of law can choose to get advanced education and training here at Syracuse University,
or choose to really explore amongst the variety of options of American law and legal training.
Syracuse University is located in the City of Syracuse, in New York State. It's a medium-sized
American city, which gives you a variety of different housing opportunities. There are
apartments available on campus, so that students can live right by the law school, or you can
explore in the city itself. Off-campus housing opportunities run the entire gamut. There
are apartments available in the city itself, or there are suburbs located very close by.
The Syracuse University housing center would be happy to help you find housing that is
suited to you and your family.
So, if your'e the type of lawyer who is interested in coming to the United States and studying
American law, and you think that you've got the kind of diverse background that we're
looking for, as well as a reall mastery of English, we're hoping that you can be a part
of our inaugural class of 2012.
