Cultural heritage is one of the biggest challenges in Europe
we have a lot of historical cities, buildings,
that are very much protected and
we believe that it is possible to conciliate
both rights, the stone rights and the people rights.
It’s just about being a bit innovative and creative.
The League of Accessible and Historical Cities is a project from the European Foundation Centre
it has been incubated within the European Consortium of Human Rights and Disabilities.
It has been incubated within the European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability.
The League was a great opportunity for us
because what we miss at the moment is
to share our experience within a network.
Mais les angles des autres villes c’est tujours trés precieu
à fin à hier il ya a un monde d’initiatives qui sont trés interessants
It’s an exchange of experiences and of tools, and maybe ideas
so that we say 'Ok, I didn't thought about that, why not?'.
This is a real collaboration of Foundations acting together, working together,
and developing a real operational project.
First of all we have chosen to work with something very concrete
It's about 1 km in the city centre
Within this 1 km we would like not only some emblematic spots of the city to be included
but also shops and restaurants that are within this itinerary
it needs to be accessible for all
In fact, the projects are very very different because the reality is that people are working with is very different.
Everyone agreed that we should have this designed concepts very fast
I mean the designed concept give us a variety of ideas.
We have been co-operating with local authorities to make on this project
There is a new technology that we are still testing on our walls
There is a new technology that we are still testing
that means that the visually impaired people can use a 'smart cane'
together with GPS and Bluetooth
and they can receive directly from underground
the information on the itinerary and follow the itinerary.
Avila has developed an accessibility analisis of restaurants, of hotels and historical buildings.
Avila won and was awarded by the European Commission as a European Accessible City in 2010.
Now Palazzo Madama offers lots of multimedia services
the aim of the staff is different, there was a change of mindset
of the people working there
and it became an opportunity and a point of strengthness
and it became an opportunity and a point of strengthness
even for the normal activity of the museum
and it's a beautiful way to show how disability is a way to help the society.
Local institutions are also very important in the dialogue for improving accessibility
It cannot be done from the top
it must be done also from the bottom.
A basic motto of the European Disability Forum, 'nothing about us without us'
Means that we want to insure that in all decisions affecting the lives of people with disabilities
are taken without acting their advice.
This is really open for any foundation that would be interested
to take the challenge infact, to become a little bit operational in regards to disability.
We're aiming now at exploring new partners, maybe people from eastern Europe,
central Europe, where we don't have any partners for the time being
The aim is to provide complete guidelines
and we'll do a best practises guide at the end of the project
to share all these experiences with our peers and cities
and all the stakeholders that could be interested in this issue.
