Six Costly Myths when San Antonio Choosing Storage. Call them myths or misconceptions,
mending these minor errors in thinking will streamline your storage decisions and save
you a boatload of money to boot!
Storage Myth #4 A Lock is a Lock is a Lock is a Lock when
renting storage in San Antonio TX.
While theft at a self storage facility is not at all common, maintaining a strong overall
security system is vital. And as a part of this security system, the high-security lock
that secures the storage unit door is an extremely important element. It should not be considered
a mere afterthought. In fact, the very best final defence against a thief is a solid locking
device right at the door. And no, not all locking options are the same.
Most Storage facilities today utilize one of two basic types of locks to secure the
unit doors. About 80% of all facilities today still rely on some form of external, “padlock”
type of hanging locking device. The other 20% of the facilities utilize an “internal”
type of lock called a “Cylinder Lock”.
Now looking at the photo here, you'll see that this is a Standard Padlock. Its Security
Level, definetly Poor Security. Standard padlocks, like those found in your
garage or your gym bag, are usually a poor choice for securing a storage unit.
The lock shank is fully exposed, making it easy to cut with common bolt cutters and the
long lock shank makes this type of lock susceptible to “striking” with a sledge hammer.
A Disc Lock. The security Level for this, the Best Security for the external type locks.
The most popular lock type for storage units is the Disc Lock and this type is much more
advanced than a standard padlock. Disc locks are generally resistant to striking, drilling
and picking and they are designed with a thick shackle that fits closely around your storage
unit closures device, making it difficult to force bolt-cutters onto the shackle.
Now some drawbacks to the Disc Lock, They're a bit more expensive than a standard
padlock, but the added cost is well worth it.
And also while less susceptible to “striking” with a sledge hammer than a common padlock,
these locks do still “hang” from the closure device, so striking is still possible.
Now looking at the Internal Locking Device, called a Cylinder Lock. The Security Level
for this also is Best Security. About 20% of all storage facilities in the
U.S. are using an “internal” locking device called a cylinder lock. These are safe because
they are enclosed inside of the storage unit door, not unlike the door lock of a house
or business office.
These locks are resistant to cutting, striking and prying because there is no exposed shackle
to cut or strike. These locks also have a unique, non-duplicable key and are much more
difficult to pick.
There are drawbacks to the Cylinder Lock: • Often Cylinder locks are “master”
keyed, where the Facility Manager can open the lock without any sign of forced entry.
This can cause a problem for you in the event that you find things missing from your unit.
• Also acquiring a Cylinder Lock can only be done from the facility, leaving you to
pay whatever they say you must pay. • Finally, there is greater risk that “cheap”
storage managers may “recycle” these cylinder locks, providing a lock that was previously
used by a past tenant.
