This is a weather briefing from the National Weather Service in Las Vegas highlighting
“what weather conditions can normally be expected” for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s
Day in Las Vegas. The graph above shows the observed temperature
at McCarran International Airport at Midnight (12 AM) on New Year's Eve for each year going
back to 1990. While the average temperature for this time period was 43 degrees, the above
graph shows that the temperature was as cold as 27 degrees at midnight in 1991 and as warm
as 57 degrees in 1999.
The high temperatures on New Year’s Day since 1937 have varied from the upper 30s
to the upper 60s with low temperatures ranging from the low 20s to the upper 40s.
The 30 year normals for Las Vegas are a high temperature of 56 degrees and a low of 38
degrees. Although the normal precipitation for the date is 0.02 the next couple of slides
will show how rare precipitation is on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas has only observed precipitation on 5 occasions since 1937.
0.21 of rain in 1943, 0.01 of rain in 2005, traces of snow in 1959 and 1964 and a trace
of rain in 2004. So rain or snow is very infrequent on New Year’s Eve.
New Year’s Day in Las Vegas has only observed precipitation on 4 occasions since 1937.
4 inches of snow in 1974, 0.01 of rain in 2006, traces of rain in 1950 and 1957. Rain
or snow is also very infrequent on New Year’s Day.
The latest 8-14 Day Outlook from the Climate Prediction Center indicates an increased probability
for below normal temperatures for southern Nevada from Dec. 28-Jan. 3rd.
