D|Focus Systems continues expanding their product line.
Today we'll be taking a look at one of their newest offerings...
the D|Matte Complete Matte Box!
The D|Matte it's a professional Matte Box system...
designed for the current generation of smaller cameras.
It has an ABS plastic construction, light but sturdy...
with some aluminum pieces in its structure...
and weighting only 500g in its heaviest configuration.
It measures 22cm long...
17cm tall...
and 6cm in depth.
It's opening can be used with lenses
with an external front diameter of up to 86mm.
It has two stages for 4x4 filters...
and the rear one can rotate 360 degrees...
essential for polarized filters.
They are inserted directly into the D|Matte
without the need of filter holders...
and are taken out by pushing them
through the bottom opening.
The basic version includes a French flag made
of plastic to reduce the overall weight of the unit.
It also comes with an 82mm adapter ring
which allows to clip it directly to the front of the lens.
The full kit, known as "D|Matte Complete"...
adds a metal 15mm rod mount.
This turns the system into a swing away Matte Box...
a very popular option in professional productions
because it allows for faster lens swaps.
The rod mount also allows for 8cm of vertical adjustment...
very useful to align the system to any camera o rig.
It also comes with the "Lens Sock"...
made of a semi elastic fabric that helps to avoid
light leaks between the lens and the Matte Box.
Lastly, the kit includes two side flags made of aluminum.
A Matte Box has two main functions...
First, it allows the use of larger filters to control our image.
In this example we can see a filter less clip
that is clearly overexposed.
Now we are using an ND filter in the D|Matte
to achieve the desired final look and correct exposure.
It's second use is to control the external light that can hit
our lens and create unwanted flaring and loss of contrast.
By simply adjusting the top and side flags
we get rid of the problem.
The D|Matte Complete it's an excellent choice if you need all
the professional features of a Matte Box...
at a much lower price than similar models.
Plus, it's very light and compact, which can be very important
depending on the user, rig or type of project.
