Hello my name is Peggy Newfield creator of Manners for 3, 4 & 5 Year
Olds.
In videoing a class of children for you to see the teaching techniques that I
use I chose three year olds.
We had ten children and three adults in the class.
Our class lasted for fifty-five
to sixty minutes each day.
We chose to teach the ten lessons everyday for two weeks.
The children were never discipline problem because our syllabus changes
rapidly from topic to topic and then repeats the information again.
It was hard for me to edit each lesson down to twelve to fifteen minutes for
you to view
because the footage was
so charming.
Good luck.
Congratulations on making a positive difference in a child's life.
Good Morning Ms. Newfield
It's so nice to see
you today.
We are going to actually wrap up a couple of things. What does it mean when
you say you are going to wrap up some thing? What does that mean? Do you know?
You are going to finish. Like finish - If you wrapped up a present you would be finished? Right? So were
going to finish with a couple of things.
Who remembers one rule of introductions from yesterday?
If you have two girls or if you have two boys does it matter whose name you
say first? No. Okay, who would like to
introduce two - okay Caroline you had your hand up first even before instructions
but would you please introduced two girls at the table?Matilda I would like to you to meet my friend Brooke. Brooke I would like you to meet my friend Matilda.
I think that is absolutely perfect. Now
excellent young lady.
The next would be is there
is there a boy at the table who would like to volunteer to
introduced two people? You had your hand up first Lex.
Jack meet my friend Skyler.
Skyler meet my friend Jack.
Excellent! And I like the way you made eye contact. You looked over at Jack.
Boys and girls when we say somebody's name we look in their eyes.
This is our power right here. Our eyes.
When you have an older person
and you have a younger person
you say the older person's name first.
Let's use Ms. Vicki your teacher. She is an older
person than you.
So if I was in the room and
I wanted to introduce one of you to Ms.Vicki
here's what I would say - Ms.Vicki's name first. The older person's name first.
Ms.Vicki I'd like you to meet
my friend Matilda.
Matilda this is Ms. Vicki and she's a wonderful teacher.
Good morning boys and girls. Good morning Ms. Newfield. How are you?
I hope you had a nice nice weekend. Today
we are going to
talk about
how you sound
on the
telephone.
When you answer the phone we're going to show you what other people hear.
Ms. Jones if you could record me just a moment
Hello
my name is Peggy Newfield. [Playback: Hello, my name is Peggy Newfield.]
Now we're going to do the same for you. Because
this is what people hear
when you answer the phone. And it's very important to speak distinctly
Remember the boy who saved his mother's life?
He distinctly - that means he spoke
clearly
giving his address so that the ambulance could come. Oliver will let you be first.
Your going to say
hello my name is Oliver. That's what you say.
Hello my name is Oliver.
Excellent!
Lex - Hello my name is Lex. My name is Jack
Well jack we have to say hello. We always say hello. Hello my name is Jack.
Hello my name is Skyler.
Oh I just love that. Lets play them back and listen. My name is Oliver.Hello my name is Lex.
Hello my name is Jack.
Hello my name is Skyler.
Excellent! Boys and girls for the first time. You loved that?
Well we've got more to do. Are we going to do some more?
Oh we are going to do some more. You see the phones there on the table.
So were going to be doing some more for sure.
Boys and girls
do you know what
when we hear the sound of our voice
it makes us
laugh
because
we don't think we sound like that
but we do.
It is so important
for you
to speak
distinctly.
Boys and girls, do you know where you live?
You all live in Atlanta, GA. Here we go. So your going to say hello
my name is Oliver I live in Atlanta,Georgia. Hello, my name is Oliver I live in Atlanta,Georgia
Come on in. Wow!
Stand behind
your chair. Come on in.
Good morning. Good morning boys and girls it's so nice to see you. Would you please sit down in
your chair
pull it out and be very careful.
Hands immediately go in your laps.
We have a very special special lunch for you today.
So that we can practice all of our dining skills.
The teacher
is taking her cloth napkin
anytime you have a
cloth napkin
you only open it half way.
Now what happens to
a paper napkin? What's the difference?
It gets open whole. It gets open all the way. That's right.
So our cloth napkin, would you please just pick it up but
pick it up to the side so that you don't get it in your food.
Pick it up to the side.
And open it half way.
Excellent! Excellent!
Pick up your knife and fork
and go into a cutting position.
You are fantastic. Lex, you are fantastic.
Palm of the hand. Your hands go down. Would you like a piece of cantaloupe first?
Alright, come and eat off the back of your fork first.
Oh and just keep your hands down.
He's not in the palm of his hand.
Palm of his hand.
How is Ryan do that? It's perfectly good.
What do you think? Great green beans.
Shape of a V.
Tiny bite. Not a big gulper - oh I know when your ready
but we hold like a pencil. Alright
