The best apps in the field of government were honoured at CeBIT 2013 with
the "Gov Apps Prize". The winner in the "Federal" category: the "Customs and
Travel" app from the Federal Ministry of Finance and ]init[.
"The ministry is delighted to win the prize, it is an
incentive and
it shows that we are moving in the right direction.
The proliferation of smartphones now makes it possible to reach everyone, even
when they are on the move. Travel is a very important subject in
Germany. Germans love to travel.", so it is hardly surprising
that the "Customs and Travel" app has been well received by the
general public.
"250,000 downloads from the App Store
are the best evidence of this.
Games or small gadgets are most commonly found in the top positions in the
App Store, so the fact that this app reached the top 3
clearly shows what the public want." This is, above all,
practical, useful applications.
The "Customs and Travel" app allows travellers to quickly and easily
discover what they may and may not bring back from
abroad.
Along with the app's usefulness and high level of innovation, the jury were
impressed with the transferability of the underlying idea to other areas.
"This brings a new dimension to public services -- mobile access. It will reduce the need for personal visits to the authorities,
which is obviously a very good thing, so I'm particularly delighted that we were able to
initiate this process in working group 3 of the
national IT Summit, and to be able to honor
the best apps with this competition."
Mobile apps open up new opportunities for public authorities
to offer the public convenient services.
The Federal Ministry of Finance would like to expand its activities
further in the field of mobile solutions." We are fortunate to have a minister who is very open to innovation
and new solutions.
We consider this prize
as an an opportunity to
develop the app further, and
are currently in the process of designing and creating
the first update. This
update will bring more
really useful functions
which will improve the app, and ensure that we win the prize
again.
