I'd like to talk to you about a problem that we often find on the internet,
that being forms, which I'm going to demonstrate with an exercise
in which I need to tick boxes.
According to the Production Statistics table
in the period if 1946 - 1974, indicate the growth in France?
Two responses are expected: Title - growth was rapid - tick box, not ticked
I'm going to look at all the tick boxes to see what the options are
Sustained - tick box, not ticked
Disjointed - tick box, not ticked
Interrupted - tick box, not ticked
Interrupted - tick box, not ticked
Strong - tick box, not ticked
Negative - tick box, average
Tick box, blank
Button - confirm button
I'm going to tick the answers "sustained" and "strong", which are the right answers in my opinion
and average - tick box - negative
strong - space - ticked - interrupted - tick box - disjointed
tick box - sustained - tick box - space - ticked - tick box
growth was rapid - sustained ticked
I've ticked the right boxes according to my voice synthesis, so I'm going to confirm my answers
Button - confirm button - enter - incorrect response
The fact that some boxes aren't associated with a word has caused my synthesis to make a mistake,
which means that I've ticked the wrong boxes and so given the wrong answer.
Even though I'm sure that "sustained" and "strong" were the correct answers
I haven't ticked the right boxes.
In this case the mistake isn't serious
but it can have much more serious
consequences, for example in registering online for university
or in ordering a train ticket, if I were to fill in the wrong field of tick the wrong box
it would cause me a lot of problems.
I'm going to show you a town council website on which the forms are accessible.
You'll see how it works:
Title of part 3 - information concerning the petitioner
Title; asterisk, civility - button not selected;Melle - 1 of 3
"Melle" means "mademoiselle" (Miss)
enter - select your active form - tab, tab. Asterisk, enter forename;
press the capital Tab - asterisk, enter surname; enter text
k, r, e, m, p Tab - asterisk, enter forename; enter text i, s, a, e,
As you saw, I had no problems in filling in the fields
of the form with my surname and forename, it was all clear,
I know exactly which field I'm in 43 00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:38,000 and I can fill in the form without any problems.
You should understand that when we're talking about fillilng in a classwork exercise
a mistake in the form isn't too serious,
but these sorts of mistakes can be a lot more unfortunate when we're talking about filling in
an online registration form for university or an order form for
train or plane tickets, for example. So forms are very important
and it's important for them to be clear and straightforward so that we
can fill them in without worrying.
As this video has hopefully demonstrated, a form can be accessible
to people using specific technical aids to go online.
It's a question of the developer conforming to certain recommendations.
In the case of a HTML form, the label tag associated with the id and for attributes
allow us to directly link a field to its associated text.
Thus, when a voice synthesis is used in form mode
it can establish precisely the link between the field to be filled
and information found just before or after the field.
To facilitate access to the form it is, furthermore, recommended to group
fields of the same nature together using the fieldset tag.
The legend tag, in combination with the fieldset tag, allows us to give a title
to each block of information, thus making it easier to find.
The method of moving between fields using the keyboard must be logical.
If the order of navigation with a keyboard doesn't correspond to the order of the source code,
it is advisable to use the tabindex attribute and to add an order of tabulation to it.
In this case, regardless of the order of the source code, the tabulation will put the information in the following order:
Name
Society
Email
Website
Address
When completion of a field in a form is obligatory
it's important to explicitly specify this.
Explaining that all fields with a star must be filled in
is an easy way to do this.
Marking obligatory fields in a different colour or listing them at the end of the form
are techniques to avoid as they don't adequately serve all users.
Confirmation is the final stage of the completion of any form.
The confirmation button must be clearly identified particularly when using an image.
It is then necessary to identify the image with clear text.
