Despite tempers soaring across Britain’s major cities, the 92-year-old monarch rolled out the red carpet for Mr and Mrs Trump and greeted him with a smile - despite being kept waiting ten minutes for the American to arrive
But how does Trump’s controversial visit compare to Barack Obama and wife Michelle’s in 2009? Here, Express
co.uk takes a closer look at the difference between the Trump and Obama state visits
The Queen played host to three other US presidents at Windsor Castle, including Barack Obama in 2016, George W Bush in 2009 and Ronald Reagan in 1982
As the 45th President of the United States, it was clear Mr Trump would be treated to a spectacular pomp and pageantry display
But Mr Trump’s appeared much larger than the show Obama received at his state visit in 2016
Mr Obama was greeted by both the Monarch and husband Prince Philip during his visit
Though today, Mr Trump was treated to an intimate meeting with just the Queen following Prince Philip’s retirement from public duties last May
Comparing both greetings with the Queen, the confident Obamas ruffled feathers by breaking royal protocol by touching the Queen and leading her
But uncharacteristically for Mr Trump, he appeared more reserved and took her hand gently when she offered it, something the Queen is said to prefer for greetings
He also followed her lead as she walked them around the castle during a lavish pomp and pageantry display
, with Barack Obama even playing table tennis with then-prime minister David Cameron and high-fiving one another after the game
But this draws stark comparison to Donald Trump’s meeting with Theresa May, which was strained after he declared in an interview with The Sun no trade deal would take place between the US and UK should she deliver a soft Brexit
Though he retracted these comments today and showered praise on Mrs May and the “great job” she was doing with negotiations
