>> Robert J. Zimmer: So in 2007 I appointed a Diversity Leadership Council
to support the university's work in diversity including staff employment,
business contracting, and community relationships.
And as part of its mission, the council developed the Diversity Leadership Awards
to recognize each year both an outstanding staff member and an outstanding alumnus
who have made extraordinary contributions to advance diversity
across the university, in the community, and beyond.

>> Julie Peterson: In a variety of roles our staff members are critical
to the singular environment, one in which people are valued for the quality
of their contributions and not for their identity, background, or status.
Lynda is a shining example of the dedication and commitment to excellence
that makes this environment possible.
For a quarter century she's been a leader in supporting diversity at the University
of Chicago Medical Center, in the university itself, and in the community.
At its core diversity is about inclusion and respect,
and Lynda Hale embodies these qualities.
For her contributions to the medical center, to the university, to her community,
and to the lives of those people whom she touches every day,
it is my honor to announce the 2011 Diversity Leadership Staff Award winner, Lynda Hale.

>> Lynda Hale: I want to say thank you to the Leadership Council for this recognition.
It really means a lot to me.
It is our racial, cultural, and religious diversity that fuel the source of our strength.

>> William A. McDade: It's a great pleasure to present the Diversity Leadership Award
to an alumnus and my colleague and friend Dr. James Bowman.
Dr. Bowman has dedicated himself to the University
of Chicago as a professor and as an alum.
For more than half a century, Jim and his family have been fixtures on the South Side of Chicago
and active members in the greater Chicago community.
>> Hon. Louis Sullivan: So Jim, with all of his mentoring he's done here at Chicago,
the leadership he has shown around the country, his scholarship as an educator and hematologist,
I wanted to come to join with all of you in thanking Jim
for what he has contributed to all of our lives.
>> I confer upon you the 2011 Diversity Leadership Alumni Award
for your extraordinary leadership in advancing social justice and equality.
>> Dr. James Bowman: Well, it is an honor to be selected as one
of the year's Diversity Leadership Award recipients.
I'm also honored for receiving this award with Lynda Hale.
I must thank the university -- and I always say "The University" --
and it should be with a capital The.
Everybody said, "Why do you use it with a capital The?"
I said because that is The University, there's no other.
>> Here. Here.
