Mr. Cedar here from a new home construction project, where we're installing Real Cedar
siding over Tyvek Drain Wrap.
In this particular case, they're installing
pre-stained Western Red Cedar siding, which has been stained on all six sides from factory.
Pre-finishing cedar siding on all six sides is very very important to long term performance.
It's recommended that cedar siding be pre-finished on all six sides prior to installation.
In this particular case, this siding was factory finished with a penetrating stain.
If a solid body finish is desired, like solid stain or paint, we recommend that the siding be pre-primed
with a stain blocking primer. If the grade look is desired, we recommend the use of a
bleaching oil or a weathering stain. Again, applied to all six sides and of course you
can choose clear stains or transparent stains but they have the shortest service life. In
all cases, the siding should be pre-stained or pre-primed on all six sides. You can choose
to let the cedar siding weather naturally, but this will impact the siding's ability
to take and hold a primer and a paint coat later on because of UV degradation. In all
cases, it's very very important for regular maintenance to keep the siding clean and free
from mold and mildew. In addition to Western Red Cedar being available in a wide range
of grades, it's also available in a wide range of sizes. From one by three to five quarter
two by twelve. Your choice. You can get the look you want with Real Cedar Siding.
