It’s an exciting time to be a psychiatrist because there’s an explosion of knowledge
that is beginning to give us an understanding of how disordered brain circuits contribute
to the development of psychiatric illnesses.
I try to look at each individual patient and assess what the patient’s need is and what
the patient’s preference is. I can’t think of any depressed patient who I treat with
medication alone because patients are more than neurocircuits or collections of neurotransmitters
in the brain. They’re human beings who have psychological processes, as well as biological
processes operating.
