Welcome to DSMTV News.
Feeding our growing world population
is one of the biggest global challenges we are facing today.
In this show, you will learn how we,
through our strengthened partnership with the World Food Programme,
are combating global hunger and malnutrition,
and how our smart packaging materials help reduce food waste.
Enjoy the show.
Here in Davos, around 2,500 world leaders
have gathered at the World Economic Forum
to discuss the state of the world.
DSM is, for the second year in a row,
co-sponsor of the World Food Programme Tent.
This morning, DSM and the World Food Programme
announced another three-year partnership extension
to combat global hunger and malnutrition.
The partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme
started here at the World Economic Forum, six years ago.
Because Presidents of African countries
were complaining about the food that we are providing out of the West,
carbohydrates, but no micronutrients.
Now we are six years further.
We talk about nutrition security in the world
and not only about food security.
Taking care of the right food, not only of food, but nutritious food.
The partnership has not just been about providing nutritious food.
WFP and DSM have also looked into
how providing food allows those who receive it
to take care of themselves.
A good example is the school meals programme
that motivates parents to send their children to school
where they get a nutritious meal and learn at the same time.
Proper nutrition will allow these children
to grow up to be mentally and physically healthy,
so they will better contribute to society when they grow up.
No one organization, no one corporation can do this alone.
Working together, we bring the best of both communities
to ensure that more children
are relieved of the challenges of chronic malnutrition.
DSM with the World Food Programme is now supporting 15 million people.
What will we do going forward? We'll scale this up,
almost doubling it, to 25-30 million people in three years,
taking care of vulnerable people, taking care of mothers and children,
who don't have the luxury we have of daily food.
When children have access to the right nutrition and education,
it transforms their life chances.
They'll be able to lead much more productive and prosperous lives
than their parents. That will also benefit their community.
I am proud that DSM together with the World Food Programme
is taking its responsibility,
and combating global hunger and malnutrition.
This is Herman Betten for DSMTV News from Davos, Switzerland.
Have you ever stopped to think
how we can keep food fresher for longer?
With 9 billion people in 2050, all equally in need for food,
we really need to stop wasting food.
We throw away food when it doesn't look
or smell that good anymore,
but that actually can be prevented with good packaging.
Frank, I've heard that DSM has some smart solutions for packaging
that can reduce food waste.
Yes indeed. Our packaging solutions can keep food fresh and safe.
We came up with a smart approach
to make materials that manipulate what passes in and out of the packaging.
For example, in this packaging,
the excellent oxygen barrier and the mechanical strength
keep the oxygen level very low in the packaging.
So therefore, the pasta can stay fresh for several months.
And this is another perfect example of how to keep food safe.
We created materials that can withstand a wider temperature range.
From frozen until cooking,
the ham always stays in the same packaging.
So the risk of contamination is almost zero.
So these products help reduce food waste?
This is on top of the agenda of the European Union.
They announced that 2014 will be the year to fight food waste.
And they have set an ambitious target of 50% food waste reduction by 2025.
Thanks Frank.
I'm proud that we at DSM are helping reduce food waste,
and making more food available.
