To recap a bit, there are two types of cells: Eukaryotic and
prokaryotic. In the last video we talked about eukaryotic
which means we are going to be talking about prokaryotic.
What's going on everybody! My name is Jack Jenkins and this is
Academy of One. Today we are going to talk about
prokaryotic cells. [Music]

Prokaryotic are cells that don't have a nuclease. They are generally less than 5
micrometers which is a lot smaller than the 10 to 100 micrometer range of
eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells are usually archaea or
bacteria. The last difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic is that the
ribosomes in prokaryotic are smaller. Prokaryotic
come in four different shapes. Cocci is the spherical one.
Bacilli are rod-shaped. Spirochaete is spiral
and vibrio is comma-shaped. Prokaryotic contain a flagellum,
connected to the cell wall. The role of the flagellum is to move the cell
around. It also serves as being a sensory organelle for the cell. Kinda like
the eyes and ears of the cell. Like eukaryotic, prokaryotic do
contain a cell wall and a plasma membrane. Prokaryotic on the other hand,
usually have a glycocalyx coating around it. Glycocalyx
literally means sugar coat and is just a polysaccharide of sugars.
In some prokaryotic cells, the coating will form a capsule
around the cell wall. The point of the wall is to protect the cell from being eaten by
eukaryotic. This may not be a good thing however because some prokaryotic
cells, such as H influenza... Is terrible for humans.
All the DNA within a prokaryotic cell is held within the nucleoid. The difference
between a nucleoid and a nucleus of a eukaryotic cell is that a nucleoid
Isn't surrounded by a membrane. Prokaryotic also tend to have a single
chromosome, although there are exceptions. Believe it or not, we are
done! I told you prokaryotic cells were simple? In the next video I will be
going in detail about the plasma membrane. Going down to
the nitty-gritty. Meanwhile, visit Academyofone.org for more
