PAT LOUIS: On behalf Expert Village, I'm Pat Louis in Miami, Florida. And today, I'm going
to show you some basic drum rhythms. Now, there are a lot of songs, a lot of ballads
today that use what we call a 6/8 feel which is essentially a similar feel to the 50s ballads
of those days. For instance, a 6/8 fill beat simply means that you've got six beats in
a measure and the backbeat actually comes on the fourth beat. So, you've got, one-two-three-four-five-six-one-two-three-four-five-six-one-two-three-four-five-six
like this, " We took a walk and past my house late last night" or "oh Donna, oh Donna".
That's a 6/8 feel and that is use for many, many ballads over the years from the 50s all
the way up through today. Whitney Houston has a couple of songs that also use that beat.
Now, the interesting thing is it can be misunderstood as a 3/4, because there are six beats. Sometimes
people will be flicking it, so one-two-three-one-two-three-one-two-three-one-two-three, but in reality it's one-two-three-four-five-six
and that's were the backbeat comes on the fourth beat. If you can know where the backbeat
is, you know whether it's a 6/8 or a 3/4.
