Innovation in creativity
will truly cure the ills of these times.
With this graduating class same definitely not wary
about America's future
in your playful in creative hands.
When I asked Dr. Brown
what I should talk about today
she smiled and said talk about two minutes.
That's not easy.
Distinguished
but exhausted faculty,
teary-eyed grandparents,
parents and loved ones who deserve a medal of honor
for getting you through school,
to FIT and SUNY
who
to FIT and SUNY
thank you.
I truly am so honored to share this day with
Nina
and Norma
and of course
our class of 2010.
To my mom,
my sister,
and niece, who are here,
now that I'm graduating
I just wanted to let you know that I am not planning on moving back home.
Let me also apologize for Mr. Potato Head who is probably picketing outside.
He believed that he should be here and not I.
He would have quoted G.B. Shaw:
We do not stop playing
because we get older.
We get older
because we stop playing.
No matter what they tell you,
never stopped playing,
especially with toys.
To my class of 2010,
and to our Hasbro fourteen FIT toy design graduates,
and to Judy and the toy design team, a little story by Laura Easley.
And I think many of you probably know it, but it's appropriate
Once upon a time
there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean
to do is writing.
He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore.
As he took
as he looked down the beach he saw a human,
figure moving like a dancer.
He smiled himself to think of someone who would dance to the day
So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer
he saw that was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing.
But instead he was reaching down to the shore
picking up something
and very gently
throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer,
he called out,
"Good morning!
What are you doing?"
The young man paused looked up and replied,
"Throwing star fish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked why are you throwing star fish in the ocean?"
"The sun is out
and the tide is going out.
If I don't throw them,
they'll die."
"But young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along it?
You can't possibly make a difference."
The young man listened politely
and bent down,
picked up another starfish, threw it into the sea
past the breaking waves and said,
"It made a difference."
We have all been gifted
with the ability
to make a difference.
If we can become aware
of that gift
and we gain through the strength of our visions
the power to shape
the future,
we must each find our starfish.
If we throw our stars wisely
and well,
the world will be blessed.
Always remember what Emerson said:
What lies before us
and what lies behind us
are tiny matters
compared to what lies
within each and every one of us.
Class of 2010,
we did it!
Let's take what lies within us
and make a difference in shaping the future.
Good luck,
thank you,
and Godspeed
