If you’re planning a major home extension or renovation project that will cost over $5,000
it’s important that your builder is registered with the Building Practitioners Board
and make sure you have a written major domestic building contract in place.
You’ll need a written contract even if the scope of works is spilt into several smaller amounts
all adding up to over $5,000.
Get a building lawyer and technical expert to review your contract before you sign.
For projects over $12,000,
your builder will need to provide a current certificate of domestic building insurance.
which covers you if the builder dies, is insolvent, or disappears.
To make your renovation or extension a success, remember to
check your builder is registered;
use a written major domestic building contract;
and make sure the builder provides a certificate of domestic building insurance for projects over $12,000.
