Hi, on Netbooknews.it today we’ll see
the video review for Dell XPS 10 and its dock keyboard.
It’s a 10-inch Tablet, Operating System: Windows RT.
It’s available in Italy since a few days, it starts from 499 Euros,
with its optional dock keyboard which, once connected,
adds another battery, outputs and obviously board and touch-pad.
Other Tablets run Windows RT,
but here we have the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4
dual core processor 1.5 GHz, much more powerful than Tegra3 of the competitors.
From the quality point of view, it really looks like XPS portables,
for example XPS 12 we talked about a few days ago.
The anchoring system of the dock station it’s very important,
I have to say in this XPS 10 it’s well structured.
We have this keyboard with a thick hinge, which feels solid ,
and with these additional small pods to slot in
it’s all more stable when connected.
The display is IPS, resolution 1366x768 pixel,
good brightness, so if set to 100% you could use it outdoor.
Dysplay’s covered by the Gorilla Glass.
One of Windows RT’s pride,
besides the Metro interface
and a great version of Internet Explorer optimized for that UI,
which has a beautiful zoom and gives a pleasant Web experience,
is Office 2013 RT, an exclusive version on devices like this
with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote
which allow to have many functionalities available on other Office versions.
It’s not an evaluation version,
but a limited version specifically for ARM devices,
clearly exclusive for devices with Windows RT.
On the other hand, in addition to expected compatibility issues
with Windows programs already existing, ‘cause they use different architectures,
I found on XPS 10 some stability problems of the operating system.
Sometimes it happens to crash or doesn’t open specific apps
or is bad-synchronized with the keyboard…
...all maturity problems,
after all this OS is for sale and official since two or three months,
and it’s featured on three-four devices so we can’t expect that much.
Moreover, it lacks some apps on Windows Store,
for example there’s no alternative browser,
no player to watch mkv videos, although there are some programs
that should do that, but actually don’t.
With this kind of product,
it may happen you have to do without some apps you think are obvious,
but are not available for Windows RT yet.
That would be acceptable on a cheap device,
‘cause using Metro interface matched
with standard Windows interface you'd have the best from both,
but the fact is that devices with Windows RT
aren’t cheaper than a usual one with a Microsoft license.
So the question may be: why would I prefer
the ARM version to a standard one,
if then I don’t have real advantages on the software side?
In fact, actually advantages are: battery life and no internal fans.
So the chance to have cold and very silent devices.
Testing XPS 10, thanks to two batteries
and mainly some energetic optimizations of the Snapdragon processor,
I reached 16 hours with the Tablet connected to the dock,
so using both batteries,
and about 10 hours using the Tablet alone, brightness to 50 % and Wi-Fi on.
These results are great, I can say this XPS 10
has the best battery life of the field,
the Duo allows you to recharge it every three or four days,
and that’s great if you think it’s actually an ultra-portable,
and it can be used also to work.
To sum up, XPS 10 it’s excellent in build quality, design…
I hope I made you see how solid, nice and comfortable this device is.
It’s also the fastest Tablet running Windows RT,
thanks to the Qualcomm platform which is a step ahead of rival models,
mainly from the energetic point of view – the best battery life, as we’ve seen.
But the OS Windows RT, at this moment, is actually a limiting factor…
I advise you this product only if you really know what you’re buying,
what problems it shows, if you want to use it in desktop mode…
‘cause actually there aren’t apps compatible with desktop mode,
actually the usual apps, they’re still developing…
so you could find yourself with a really limited device.
