Hi. I'm Dr. Heath Robinson and this is a course in "What
is Geography?" You know, it is very much the case that when I am teaching at the university
at the 100, 200, and 300 level
it is for many of the students their first experience with geography
at the college level.
Some have had some experience with geography in high school
as part of a social studies curriculum, where geography may have meant
studying the state names and knowing the names of capitals and so forth.
But, many of them don't have much more experience beyond that.
So I always make sure that any of those classes
my first lecture, my first lesson, is on "What is Geography?"
as whole, regardless of the theme of the class.
So, that being the case, what I wanted to was pull that
material out in a standalone course and provide it to you
so that everyone can get this broad background on what geography
is. Because it really is the case that no matter
what course I am teaching, whether it is a world regional
geography course, a human geography course, a more specialized
political geography course, even if it is a technical class such as
geographic information systems, spatial database design, cartography,
anything like that, I ways situate those courses
within the broader context of geography as a whole.
And so I like for the student know where, what we are
learning in that particular class fits into the broader scheme
of things. And plus, I think it is very important that all the students have that
shared understanding of the background and the discipline
as a whole in order to situated themselves within the discipline
and what they are studying.
So I am very excited to have the opportunity to bring to you this video series
on "What is Geography?"
I'll see you in the first lesson.
