Hi everyone, Michael Rosenberger from the Center for Teaching and Learning and along
with our Information Technology Department we are excited to help you start taking advantage
of Google Drive, now available for everyone at Phoenix College.
The Maricopa Community Colleges and Phoenix College use the Google Apps for education
suite. So you are familiar with Gmail for campus email, and maybe you are using Docs,
Slides or other Google tools, but the most powerful tool many people don’t know about
is Google Drive.
So what is Google Drive? Well first, it is unlimited cloud storage for your workplace
needs. That’s right UNLIMITED storage for all of your documents, photos, media, and
more.
It installs directly on your computer and is accessed just like a flash drive. What’s
nice is, you open files right on your Google Drive and when you save, they are immediately
updated, so no need to worry about backing up!
Google Drive also support Maricopa’s sustainability efforts for paper reduction through advanced
sharing features. You can make documents totally private, share directly with individuals,
allow only Maricopa authenticated users to see files, or even make documents public.
So to share you can add individuals by email, share links, or embed documents and files
in classroom pages or other online areas. You can even share groups of documents by
setting folder access privileges. All of this without printing a single page.
The best thing? Anything you upload to your Google Drive automatically syncs to all your devices.
Sounds amazing, right?! I am sure you are ready to get Google Drive installed and start
using it, but hold on! You will first want to take a look at the newest Maricopa IT Directives
that provide guidance for data classification, approved storage, and sharing.
If you are ready to go now, you can contact our fine folks in the Information Technology
department to get installed and setup. For more information on using Google Drive or
any Google products, or want to see what upcoming workshops are being offered, contact the
Center for Teaching and Learning.
