Alright, so we started this project about three years ago. Oh, the other thing is that
even though I'm a web developer, I'm horrible with other forms of technology. So I think
I broke this. Still broken. When we were testing this, we were like, oh this works great. Now
it stopped working. Ok, so maybe I'll just look at you and wink. Next! Ok, so it started,
this project started about three years ago, we were looking at some facts about the agency
that are a little bit difficult to deal with. We've got lots of people working in different
places, we've got forty facilities across the country, there are people who are doing
the same job in different areas and they were constantly asking us in the web department,
how can we talk to the people who are doing the same job? As, I think this is something
very common in the federal government, there is a brain drain caused by retiring staff.
So we talked to our HR department at one point and they said that we were losing I think
thousands of hours of history, of brain power, every year from people leaving. Also typical
to the federal government, we had outdated technology, and not a really good way for
people to talk to each other. We have a very risk averse agency culture, this is kind of
changing, the more comfortable we get with risk, the easier it is. But yes, it is still
very difficult. We have buried expertise, I think for awhile the paradigm was that your
value to the agency and I would even say, kind of extend this to just work life in general.
Your value was based on what you knew and this is kind of changing to your value is
more what you share. And then the shrinking budget, which is a problem for all of us.
How can we have an environment where people are able to communicate but, based on our
same budget.
