5-5-10 Civil society objects to the draft NGO Law
The main thing that we oppose is really
the procedure.
Leave beside the contents of the draft law.
The procedure is disgusting really.
Fighting against this draft law
or if it becomes a law,
Then fighting against such
an anti-democratic law should
be considered the same
as fighting for participatory democracy
and application of human rights
in the proper sense in our country.
If you are doing something
to do with civil society
you need to consult with civil society.
You can’t really prepare a law
Without consultation with the civil society.
As we have pinpointed, there are so many
articles in this which is
even against our own constitution.
So it’s going to be a legal battle
if they are really
determined to push this over
it’s going to be a legal battle
from our point of view.
We are going to pursue the legal vote
And we expect your support also
as European Union
delegation here
supporting the Turkish Cypriot community.
As the Cyprus NGO Network
our opinion on this draft law
is that it is not compatible with EU norms
and universal human rights,
moreover it contains serious contradictions.
Again, legally, nobody can
close an association.
It’s up to the legal
authorities to close an association
within the constitution.
But now, in this draft law,
both minister
Or the Council of Ministers can do it.
How can it be? It is against our constitution.
And we are opposing it.
