On Monday 17 March, Whittlesea Council launched a community election advocacy campaign,
called Access Denied.
The campaign is timed to lead into the November 2014 State election.
The campaign aims to secure election commitments from the Labor and Liberal parties for two
key transport projects to be delivered in the first term of the next state government,
Construction of access ramps on the Hume Freeway at O'Herns Road in Epping North; and
Extension of the train line from South Morang to Mernda.
Whittlesea mayor, Councillor Mary Lalios, said the campaign was developed because residents
are denied access to basic transport services and face a daily grind of congested roads
and
inadequate public transport.
So our Access Denied Campaign is all about getting public transport and major road
infrustrasture here in the City of Whittlesea, our residents have been denied access long
enough.
A strong community voice will be critical in building political momentum for change.
Two
local community groups are partnering with the Council to ensure the voice of the local
community is heard.
I think the community will definitely respond to this campaign, there are people so
frustrated with the drive to work. Every single day they are wasting time and petrol and
spending less time with their families. I think that everyone would love to have the
rail
extension to Mernda.
The congestion is only getting worse, every day, every week, this year especially has
got
incredibly worse. We need to get our people moving, we need to get them home quicker,
we
need to get them to work quicker. Its taking longer and longer and longer and it's more
frustrating on families and its contributing to the health and wellbeing of the people
who
live in our area.
Access Denied provides the opportunity for community members along with the business
sector,
to let the Premier of Victoria, Leader of the Opposition and local members of parliament
know that the O'Herns road interchange in Epping North and the Mernda Rail extension
should
be delivered.
People can get on board with the campaign by visiting the dedicated campaign website:
www.accessdenied.net.au.
People can, Email the Victorian Premier Denis Napthine and State Opposition Leader Daniel
Andrews, Sign a Reply Paid 'Access Denied' postcard that outlines the need for these
projects. Council will provide all postcards to State politicians.Request a sign or poster
to display. Request a bumper sticker
The campaign will run from March until the lead up to State election on Saturday 29
November.
