The European Union has given a sharp slap on the wrists to embattled Ukrainian President
Viktor Yanukovich. Following talks in Brussels on Monday, foreign
ministers from the 28-member bloc said it was high time Yanukovich took steps to form
a new, inclusive government and institute reforms that would pave the way to free and
fair presidential elections. Ukraine has been rocked by months of anti-government
protests sparked by the president's refusal to sign an agreement with the EU in favor
of closer ties with Russia instead. The EU foreign ministers also said they were
deeply concerned by the human rights situation, including violence, cases of missing persons,
torture and intimidation as part of the Ukrainian government's crackdown against demonstrators.
