Welcome to Inside!
My name is Karin Koller
and I am happy to welcome you to our new show.
We are all about lifestyle and culture
where you get to join me
to see what is going on behind the scenes.
Today I am at the “Burgkino”
where the premiere of “The Shapeshifter” is going to start very shortly.
Being one of the cast members
it is a great pleasure for me
to have you join me at the premiere.
Afterwards, I will be joining the martial arts training
at the “Seiryoku Ninjutsu” club in Pöttsching, Burgenland.
3 years ago was the first slate.
21 days of shooting in Vienna and Graz.
Tonight is the big day.
The crew and cast of 70 is excited
to celebrate the premiere of “The Shapeshifter” in Burgkino, Vienna.
The movie reminds us of a 60’s crime thriller
where the main character, Manuel,
reads the story of an axe murderer
which is also known as “The Shapeshifter”.
Well, the question was how we got the idea for the film.
It was 3 years ago
when we were at a party at Klemens’ place
that we talked about a man who reads about a ***
as the story develops.
I remember that we were all sitting in the bathroom at Klemens' place
thinking about how the story could continue
and then we already got the first idea
how we could even film that
at Klemens’ place in the isle and so on.
That’s how it actually all started
and developed until
finally there was the finished 48 minute film “The Shapeshifter”.
… and it was in the kitchen not in the bathroom,
just for clarification.
Michael, how would you describe your character Manuel?
Manuel, the character, perhaps hasn’t got an easy life.
What is happening to him,
his thoughts,
a little paranoid maybe.
As far as acting goes
I have created this character from the inside out
which I find the right approach.
At least for me it is most convincing …
I hope so ... yes ...
Truthfulness …
… yes.
One scene posed a special challenge on the film team.
That would be the so called “paper whirl scene”.
How can you make sheets fly in a scene?
We had 3 fans.
3 big fans.
We tried to figure out how to position them.
Left, right, above, below
and finally we discovered that
we needed to position them in a half circle
and then tried it.
48 minutes later it gets suspenseful one more time –
what does the audience say?
Have your expectations from the film premiere been met?
Absolutely.
I am very zealous from the audience reactions.
Already got good feedback?
Surprisingly good!
I have actually expected more critical voices
and thought that it would actually be more 50:50
also because we have had some test screenings before.
But now I am really very surprised from the positive feedback!
I thought it was very courageous
that the filmmakers decided to do a black and white movie.
I also liked the set decoration.
Well done!
I have also been on set sometimes
as a silent observer
and have to say that the set design department did a phenomenal job.
All the changes in the depths of space,
everything done by dolly and fix focus.
That is Hollywood.
This film made in black and white.
“The Artist” made in black and white.
Where does that lead?
What do you think?
Well, we live in a time
I would say like the historical turning of the 20th century
or the end of the 19th.
Everything is possible.
You can edit like MTV
but you can also do long shots.
Of course you need actors with a great emotional arc.
You can play with colours and change the look.
Everything is possible.
But it is still the story what makes a good film.
and the story including the making-of is also available on DVD.

What is your first reaction after watching the movie?
Well, as being one of the cast members it is always difficult to watch yourself.
At least that’s how I feel.
But cool scenes!
Cool scenes, nice moments …
suspenseful!
I can only agree …
Now you have had exclusive impressions from “The Shapeshifter”.
Now the premiere party starts for us
and for you it continues with martial arts training.
Almost everybody has heard of martial arts these days.
But what exactly is it?
How useful can it be to learn it?
We have asked Ronald Högn
who has been teaching ninjutsu since September 2008 in Pöttsching.
You have to think of ninjutsu as the original mould of martial arts
because it has been there for such a long time
it contains elements of wing tsun, krav maga, aikido.
Ninjustsu is the martial arts form practised by the Japanese Ninja
which was developed between the 12th and 15th century
and is still practised in various styles today.
The goal is to immobilize your opponent quickly,
without great effort and with all means.
So not to confuse with combat sport.
Can you explain to us the basic difference between martial arts and combat sport?
It is actually quite simple.
Combat sport is bound to rules.
Martial arts has no rules.
Have you ever had to use Ninjutsu to defend yourself?
No, thank God.
But I also work for a security company
and there I have already experienced the advantages of knowing martial arts.
Also, because we don’t do a lot of punching
but we use many leverage techniques, locking and balance.
It can therefore be very useful to learn release- or disarming techniques.
Most likely you won’t have carry a stick or sword with you all the time
but this is not even necessary.
There are many other things which you can use for self defense.
You can use everything.
Something as simple as a chapstick or an umbrella,
even a small one.
I can use a keychain.
Everything.
Even my jacket or handbag.
There is nothing which I can not or shall not use.
Here it is important that
I move,
walk around him
and stay behind him.
Now I can do this …
he can’t harm me because I am behind him.
Body and spirit are being trained at the same time.
The theme is: “A well spirit inside of a well body”.
How would you describe one of your training sessions?
We start with a silent meditation.
It takes about 10 minutes to relax
and forget about routine, work and stress.
Just the present moment.
Then it follows a traditional greeting.
For the warm-up we do some fall exercises,
very important,
rolls and basic positions.
Afterwards we start with the actual training.
Next to regular training sessions
the club also offers specific days- and weekend seminars
like weapon techniques or self defense for women.
The club “Seiryoku Ninjustu” is the only club in Burgenland which offers that kind of training.
What has actually inspired him to do martial arts?
It is the freedom that you have.
You don’t exercise the same positions for years
but you learn the basic principle of
movement and balance, breaking and holding
and as soon as that goes into your body then you are free.
You can do what you anything.
Does he have any future goals?
I am planning to expand the club
and most importantly to grant more security in the streets.
That sounds very promising.
I have really enjoyed it!
Now if you like you can also convince yourself at a trial training.
That was “INS!DE” today!
Looking forward to seeing you next time!
