Jennifer: Jennifer here from Rainbow Academy Early Learning Centers with some tips on using
sign language. Did you know that infants can communicate before they can actually verbalize
and speak? Well, they can. It’s easy with American Sign Language. Teaching your child
sign language is fun, easy and extremely beneficial.
The first tip is start early. Verbal communication, cultural acceptances and family traditions
are learning experiences that infants are exposed to at an early age. Just as an infant
inquires sounds by listening until the time he or she can vocalize, the motions of simple
signs will also be observed and studied until the ability to imitate them presents itself.
This typically comes with large and small motor dexterity development. The earlier the
exposure, the better.
Second, always vocalize. To create the signing association, it’s important that each time
you sign, you also say the word clearly.
Keep it simple and applicable. The easiest way to tap into your baby’s sign language
potential is through their stomach. Infants innately understand the feeling of hunger.
They also associate various items and routines with satiating the hunger quite early. Here’s
your opportunity. Each time you bring your child to the table or the high chair, introduce
them to the three basic signs: more, eat, and please. Prior to giving the child a piece
of food, ask them if they would like more. Even if they don’t answer, answer for them.
Do this each time, regardless of whether the child responds or not.
Lastly, be patient. Typical results will show themselves [inaudible 09:03]. The child will
attempt to sign along with you or ask. They may also begin to vocalize the word associated
with it?
You can see how important sign language is and how beneficial it is to the lessening
of frustrations when it comes to the infant’s needs. How can you continue this at home?
Bringing signing into your everyday life is easy. Begin by signing along with the alphabet
or carrying out daily routine signs such as book, dog, play and many more.
Remember signing with your baby is not only fun but, again, very beneficial. Studies have
shown that children exposed to sign language have the ability to communicate needs before
they can speak. It also has the ability to raise IQs an average of three months compared
to children not exposed to sign language. Although it is not a verbal language, you
are teaching your child a second language. Lastly, signing with your child is an amazing
bonding experience.
