In order to do their job, these Security Forces Airmen need to have the right tools on hand
to respond to any situation. For that, there's only one place they can go - the Armory.
Security Forces Armorer, SrA Jaime Romo, equips Airmen with the weapons they’ll need while
on duty. Before he hands over any weapons, though, he has to take certain steps to make
sure it’s done right. (SrA Jaime Romo)
Before I issue a weapon, I have to verify that it's safe and clear, so I'll come to
the clearing barrel and uh lock the slide back, make sure it's safe, and I look in the
chamber, and the barrel, make sure there's nothing in there and its clear. Then I would
issue it to the individual that's proceeding at the window. Same thing when I'm receiving
it. You wanna verify that it's clear, anytime you receive a weapon, so I receive the weapon,
safe and clear. I'll put it in the barrel, safe and clear, then I'm gonna send the slide
forward, and it's good to go, ready to go back on the rack.
(Narrator) When issuing and receiving weapons, there
is always one thing on Airman Romo’s mind... safety.
(SrA Romo) Safety is important because we need to be
ready to do whatever we gotta do on a daily basis, and we gotta make sure we do it properly,
we gotta make sure everybody, you know, is not in any danger, that they're available
for duty. (Narrator)
Following the proper steps to issue and receive weapons is only a small part of SrA Romo’s
job, however it’s a big part of making sure the Security Forces Airmen on Nellis are equipped
and ready to handle any situation. SrA Cody Griffith, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
