The First Year Scholars Program is a living learning community.
is a living learning community.
It really built
the family environment for me.
With a home away from home. I felt comfortable, safe
and I enjoyed it.
I came from Hodgkins Preparatory High School
It's a small charter school. Our graduating class is only on thirty seven
So,
coming from a school that had the capacity of 200 people to a big university
it was hard.
but being in classes where I knew people from the program
like making friends and having that
sense of community
it was easier.
The Course-in-Commons makes it comfortable for a student
to learn.
We're used to in high school seeing familiar faces
but when you come here
now don't really know anybody but in a way we can
relate that the Native students are in the classroom
It makes the atmosphere more comfortable and learning's easier.
The learning component for First Year Scholars.
is that on we take classes together.
We have Gen Ed classes that every unit you have take.
The Course-in-Commons picks specific
classes
we have like math and English
and TRAD
and stuff like that
you know those classes tend to be really big
It helps that you have a familiar face, know who to study with and who to go to after your class
to ask questions and talk about.
They really helped me in a lot of ways.
Without the First Year Scholars Progam
I would probably ended up dropping out.
You make friends here
so it's easy for me
to go to my friends or
the coordinators to say I have this problem I don't know what to do
So they'll
really help you out.
Having the professors can see you
The LSC teachers
they are, like, the faculty members
that work with NASA
it's a good way to get
a good
feel for
a good transition from high school to college.
Being in the program helped me to have connections
to have support
around
the University
this has is really been a pretty good
positive experience.
They really try to take care of you
and that's the staff
and everyone affiliated with the First Year Scholars Program.
I don't any other program like the First Year Scholars Program
and that is what caught my attention
in the first place in coming to the U of A.
I made so many long lasting friendships here, and with the faculty too.
That made it really enjoyable to me;
it's really like a second home to me.
there's always that support from NASA and
everyone they really get you ready
for college.
