[Music]. What's going on
everybody? Welcome to today's video on
pre-algebra. My name is Jack Jenkins and
this is Academy of One.
Today we're going to be taking a
sorry, I'm going to be lowering the camera a little bit, it's a little too high.
Today we are going to be taking a quick look at
vertical addiction. Why do I keep
saying addiction. Addition. So,
In the last video we talked about
subtracting larger numbers. And if you guys remember
that video, what we did is we lined them up to the
right and we did it one column at a time. That was called
vertical subtraction. We'll when we have
big numbers in addition we can do the same thing called
vertical addition. So,
let's go ahead and let me just recap
some rules of addition. Remember, addition is the one with the plus
sign and what you do is you just add
the columns together. So, remember,
a + b = c or
the augend plus the
added = the sum.
Those are the correct terms. I probably didn't
say them correctly cause my voice is starting to go out.
Let's go ahead and do the problem
123 +
456.
Now let's line them up on the right,
so now what we do is we do it one column at
a time. We do three plus
six equals nine. Next
column. Two plus five equals
seven. Sweet! Last column one plus
four equals five. So we have a
hundred and twenty-three plus four hundred and fifty six
equals 57
9. Good
job. See how easy it is to do
vertical addition rather than just using your hands. We'll
I don't know how many people have 579 hands
but, maybe if you're an alien watching this video then you do.
But it's easier to just do vertical addition.
So, now let's do another
problem. We have 758
+ 161.
So, now we do the first column.
8 + 1
= 9. Simple. Second
column 5 + 6
= 11. Oh! 11
we have too many tens. What should we do?
We'll we could trade them in for a hundred.
Remember what we did in subtraction, if we didn't have enough we
took something. Now that we have too many,
we just give it back. In addition we're
like robbin hood and in subtraction we're just
like bowser taking princess peach away from
mario. Not sure why my
mind went there but...
whatever. So, we have
1 + 7
+ 1. Because we added that extra one
from the one we got when we got 11.
So we got 1 + 7 which is 8 +
1 is 9. So 7
58 + 161
= 9
19. or
919. As a normal person would say it.
Man my voice is going out. I can still
do this common. Two more videos left,
hugh. Anyways,
so remember what we did last time was we
checked our work after a subtraction problem. We'll
I call that, my term a round-a-bout.
And a round-a-bout is when you check
a mathematical operation with it's inverse.
So what we did last time was we had a
subtraction problem and we checked it with addition.
What we're gonna do this time is we're gonna have an addition problem and we're gonna check
it with subtraction. So let's have
a number 381
+ 274. Remember,
let's do it one column at a time. 1 + 4
= 5. Simple. 8
+ 7 = 15. Now remember,
we have an extra one let's just give it to our neighbor
it's christmas time everybody. Give it to your neighbor.
So now it's 1 + 3
+ 2 gives a total of
6. So, 381 +
274 =
655.

[Music] Now let's round-a-bout.
So if a + b = c
then c - a = b.
Think about it, subtraction.
Love it. Alright so,
655 -
381 must equal
274 for us to do the problem correctly.
Lets go ahead and solve it. 5 - 1
is 4. 5 - 8
oops... to big of a number. We have to borrow
from the other guy. Hey other guy, can
we borrow one? Sure. So that six becomes
a five and that five becomes a six.
or that five becomes a 15. So 15 - 8
is 7 and now it's 5 -
3 = 2.
So we have 274 or
655 - 381 =
274. And since,
that is correct and that's the same number from
the one from the first time. We did the problem
correctly. Yay!

[Music]. So what I want you guys to do
is, I want you guys to start round-a-bouting your problems
This way, or your addition and
or your addition and subtraction problems. This way,
you can make sure you are a hundred
percent correct durning your problems. It's better
you do it this way cause, this way if you
guys are taking a test and you're like, augh did I do my problem correctly.
Round-a-bout it. You round-a-bout and you can see weather or not
you did it correctly or not. It's a
great thing to do. By the way, I made up the term
round-a-bout. So don't be writing it in like your
graduate thesis and use the term round-a-bout cause
that's a term I use and your professor will be like,
"What, he's a fan of academy
of one too. LEt's be facebook
buddies". And nobody wants to be facebook buddy with there
professor. Common, why
else do you think they have like 30
friends. Alright guys, so that's it for today's video
on the
vertical addition. Tune in to the next video where I
be talking about the third mathematical operator
the multiplication.
Alright guys. Go ahead and like, share and subscribe

cool stuff. And lastly,
please email your questions at
academyofone.org and if you guys want, if you love
these videos and you love Academy of One. Go ahead and donate.
Cause donating will help provide better
quality videos and we'll introduce some
guest and some more animation so these
videos arn't just me standing around in some dark
damp room fool of the dungeon monster.
Behind the door. Oh no!
There getting out. No,
Have an awesome day!
