These students have been working very hard all summer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
And because we have such a great strategic relationship with ORNL, what we
do is give our member institutions a chance to interview some of the brightest new researchers
that come into the lab before they go back home.
Well, the grad fair is a great opportunity for our member schools to talk to students
who've had a good summer experience at ORNL. And they really areÉ these are students
who are prime students who are ready to go to grad school and could really be excellent
performers at any school.
It's also exciting this year to have Y-12 join us. Some of their interns have joined us.
Those are more engineering students. So the breadth of students is just amazing.
We have biological students, physics students, chemistry students, engineering students,
just every discipline. So it's really a great chance to match these people up.
We're looking for scientists, engineers, people
interested in technology, mathematics.
This is a good place to find them?
This is an incredible place to find these kind of students. The benefit for us is they're
already test driving graduate education by doing research, so this isÉ they're on
the path, so this is a really nice place for us to come for students.
It's a cross-section of students whether they're
business, engineers, math, and science. A wide range of students that we offer opportunities
right there at Y-12.
We have actually have encountered several students here during the graduate fair and
research symposium, and we've had an opportunity to enroll and offer fellowship and scholarship
opportunity to several students at the University of South Florida.
We're looking for our top students.
The CIRE program attracts students from all across the country coming out of the top engineering
and scientific programs, and so students that have already been at the lab, working at ORNL,
getting engaged in project, meeting mentors, and doing really high-quality project work
are who we're really looking for.
I think it's good, because the people here understand the interests of the students working
at the lab, and they understand their backgrounds and what they're looking for in graduate schools.
The overall experience about learning, everything
that was going on, the history of Y-12 , that was a big thing in Oak Ridge. That was amazing what they
did back in the days. And also just being a part of new innovations that they were putting together.
Like this activity, it helps me with network and having other connections to see not only,
like, your home that you have, like other visions, other kind of opportunity and they exist.
A few of the schools around, that I've been
looking at so far, haven't looked a whole lot, are here, so just kind of nice to talk
to someone and get information that's hard to find on the website.
