Hi, my name is Shanah Trevenna and I am the director and founder of
the Student Energy Ambassador Development program, the SEAD program.
This is where a bunch of university students who are highly trained in energy auditing
teach high school and middle school and fifth and sixth graders
how to energy audit their own school.
They have very simple equipment that’s in their library that they can sign out
and you learn how to look at things that are plugged in, lighting and air conditioning
and they learn the importance of saving energy in Hawaii.
Once they learn these skills, they implement energy savings and become leaders for Hawaii’s future.
I think the funnest part was probably just like being able to teach other students
and..just, you know, going out and actually trying to make a difference here.
Me and them had a vision of, instead of it just being kept in the schools
why can’t we reach it out to other buildings or other communities or other areas of Hawaii
and I could actually picture that happening cause it could happen to
stores or other places that uses a lot of electricity and all that.
It could be a great impact.
It was inspiring for me to be able to become an energy trainer because
I really want to have a positive impact in our world
and also help reduce our oil dependency of our island.
It was amazing. I’m glad that these folks see the power of my students, just like I do.
They really can change the world.
Kids, they’ve come up with such great suggestions of how we can save energy or save electricity.
We believe these student leaders are going to model and show the way for their communities,
shifting the culture towards a consciousness around energy.
and so that people start to be really aware and make choices that save energy for Hawaii
and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels so Hawaii can then
debut an energy independent state and a model for the rest of the world.
