Manga-Tutorial: Copic Coloration Part 2
I made the tutorial for a friend. No need for wondering about the little insiders... I thought the tipps would be interesting for other, too.^^'
Doing a colour scheme
Next is the color scheme.
For that I take this bloc of paper, which is included in that other bloc of copic paper size Din A4. (German company)
You are also able to use this marker paper for doing your colour scheme by cutting it in size.
Only thing is, that it should be from the same paper. (or same company) So don't use different brands like neopiko or so with your coloring paper! Different papers show the color differently!
I've decided for this picture, to choose a brown hair color for the girl.
So I take my color chart to choose my colour for her hair. On the list I can find all my brown colours to choose of.
I like this brown. It has the number E29. I use it very often.
I owned it as normal copic and as copic ciao. I wrote that down below the color.
An insider ^_^ My friend only has copic ciao markers. Shorts are C for Copic, CC for Copic Ciao and CS for Copic Sketch.
For coloring big areas or other effects by airbrush you need Copic Sketch or Copic Marker.
Now I take out my E29, if I find it ^_^
For hair I love to use Copic Ciao or Sketch, because of its brush tip. With the brush tip it is easier to work on highlights and detailed strands of hair.
There is often the problem, that I don't have the matching colors for shadows within my owned copics.
Because of that I often vary, so that I use my chosen color as first shadow color - because the first two colours aren't too different. And use a darker grey or black as darker shadow colours.
Here I choose E47 as a lighter brown.
And for a darker shadow colour beside my E29 I will use one of the warm grey W7 or W9.
For the darkest color don't care about which style of copic you use. Because you need them only for small parts it doesn't matter that there is no brush tip.
Insider again because of her abscence of Copic markers and Copic Sketch.
Now I've chosen my colors, I put the color chart aside.
On a piece of printer paper on which I copied the image I make my color scheme to see how the colors match. If something doesn't fit, I can use other copys to try again ^-^
You can also do different color schemes and choose from one paper the haircolors, from another the eyes etc.
For me it is easier to have all colors on one paper and start all over if something doesn't fit.
Different color schemes are useful if you want to see which colors you want to choose. For example if the girl should have blond or brown hair.
If you have enough copies on copic paper you can also do all color schemes you made if you like to ^-^
I start with E47. It doesn't matter how tidy you do the color scheme, because it is only for reference.
You only want to see the colors together. You also don't have to look for shadow and light in your picture in this step.
zoom in ^_^
Again: I'll start with E47 called dark brown.
You can apply this color large-area.
Now I change to my loved E29 Burnt Umber. It is a bit reddish-brown.
Because of that I like it that much ^-^ It is a lot similar to real hair color, I think. The E47, too.
Here you can see that the two colors match very well. There aren't any clear differences on the paper at the edges of E29.
This is important in the hair, while you want no hard edges in the shadows. If you want some, you have to repeat the strokes on that part of the shadow.
I prefer soft shadows in the hair.
Now I notice, that W7 is too light as a shadow color and won't be enough. Because of that I will choose the darker grey W9.
Or I choose both. I will note both on my color scheme and try on the picture itself.
That is a thing you should do for your own picture, too, if you can't decide which color to choose.
If I put this together, I note all colors on a seperate piece of the copic paper. I use a Micron for it because it lies beside me since the linework.
I note the part of the picture which the color is for. Than I use the broad tip to line the colors up from light to dark. Below the color I note the color code (e.g. E47)
This is useful if you have to clean up you desk and don't remember after that, which colors you used.
I hate it, when all colors you use are on your desk.
I only put the ones on my desk I need for the part of the picture I'm working on.
Now I put the brown colors away.
Next I thought about green eyes to brown hair.
I have different colors to choose from. I like the blue-green very much.
For her normal green will be better. Or yellow-green.
I haven't used the sketch marker very often, which is the green one. It is really beatiful. And a lighter color.
G05 and as darker green I choose G28.
You have to watch out if the green tones fit together.
My G19 is a copic sketch. I buy them at a German onlineshop. The copic color is called Bright Parrot Green
I search all colors together.^^ In this case I have of each copic (normal, sketch and ciao) one.
I don't remember all of my colors.^^ You don't need to.
I start again with the lightest color.
On printer paper the colors show up different as on your copic paper, but that doesn't matter. We only want to know how the colors match.
The difference is that it shows up a bit lighter or darker.
The green matches very well.
Sometimes I notice that the shadows aren't dark enough. So I choose a grey to darken them. In this case a dark grey.
We see this grey more as a grey than warm grey. Warm grey seems to have a bit brown in it.
I now use the C-7 grey
That darkens the eyes a bit. Here you do also notes about the used colors.
Watch out to note from light to dark colors to differentiate similar colors better.
Now I put these one also aside.
