In the last few weeks, heavy rain and flooding
has caused residents to be evacuated from their homes in Whakatane.
Many are still unable to return.
Ongoing landslides have caused fear for residents
of these Muriwai Dr homes,
like Wiremu and his family,
who were evacuated to this millionaire's haven.
They have been conducting tests on this hillside
every day for the past four weeks.
There has been no movement,
but they have located the trouble spots.
Despite the problems caused,
fortunately his home, along with those of his neighbours,
remain safe.
Fortunately, these homes were not destroyed.
When the heavy rains hit this region,
Wiremu and his whanau were also hit hard.
When we were evacuated, my mother passed away
and my wife was in labour with our child.
However, we are alive and we have a beautiful son.
It is not yet known when the landslides will subside.
However, tomorrow morning local residents will meet
with the Earthquake Commission.
Until then, this notice will remain in place.
