I had the opportunity to be a graduate assistant with the political science department and
now I'm earning my masters in public administration. The ability to be a graduate assistant really
puts me in touch more closely with some faculty. I get to work with them as well as learn from
them. It's an experience I don't think I would have had at another school or an offer that
I think I would have had at another school. We are working, right now, on an application
that CMU is submitting to be classified by the Carnegie Foundation for community involvement.
What my internship involves is working with administrators around the school and collecting
information that we need in order to complete the application. And it's really a great opportunity
to put some of the things that I've learned in my classes into what I'm going to be doing.
It's kind of a case study in public administration so it's perfect for my major and for my program.
I'm spending a little more time in the library. More time reading and writing. I feel like,
maybe more than anything, my writing skills have sharpened since I've been a graduate
student. It's a really big focus in this program and I think probably in most programs that
writing becomes a more central component of the work that you're doing. There are a lot
of opportunities here that I don't think I would have anywhere else. So for me this was
the perfect fit. My name is Jonathan. I'm a graduate student. And I'm a CMU Chippewa.
