Welcome to Breda!
And today we're talking about the lack of woman in the arts.
Recent research by "The Guardian" has shown us, that less than 10% of all the exhibits is from females.
Today we're talking to an expert who has his own art shop.
I studied at an art-academy myself where I graduated two years ago.
80% of my class were females.
Here in the gallery Kunstroof there is also about 80% produced work by females.
I do not know how it is in the big art world
where is dealt with larger amounts of money
only in Breda, to keep it small I notice that it is the other way around.
Why I find it important that there is female influence in art?
I think because women have a different view of the world compared to men, also they have different perceptions and experiences.
In general I actually think that men and women together really should not be a thing.
That is why I think that everyone should show their own vision as an artist and show their own view of the world.
So it does not matter if the artist is male or female. Only of course then there should also be women, because only men would not be a good idea either.
For centuries women have been discriminated and unacknowledged in the arts.
We take this fact to the streets, and put the publics knowledge to the test.
Sir, how many male painters do you know?
Can you name a couple?
Oh sure, Rembrandt, Karel Appel, Monet, Anton Heyboer.
What is his name again from Zundert, van Gogh. Well there are so many.
Rembrandt, van Gogh, uhm
at the moment it does not come to mind.
Rembrandt, Picasso
Let's say van Gogh, Rembrandt van Rijn, Karel Appel, Piet Mondriaan, Jeroen Bosch.
And a couple more I guess, but they don't come to mind right now.
What about female artists or painters, can you name those?
Very little, I know one that has made beautiful portraits of Queen Beatrix, only I do not know what her name is.
At the moment I really do not know, because I just came back from teaching a class and my mind is still focussed on that.
I have no clue. You should not ask me that.
No, actually I can't.
Art is a men's thing. Oh that's a bad thing to say.
So we asked some people on the street today, and found out only little know about female artists. What do you think about this?
Logical, since like in most professions men used to have the upper hand and women were suppressed.
Of course there were some freedom fighters and entire feministic art streams.
One example that I personally like is Frida Kahlo, who made beautiful colorful works.
I believe that women are currently catching up, like I mentioned
So as we see, the public doesn't know that much about female artists.
But ther're definitely up and rising.
