Good afternoon and welcome to our Fall 2010 WebDev Cafe
Campus Forum. My name's Burt Bargerstock, I'm
helping to facilitate this community on our campus of web developers and I thank you all
for coming today.
A couple of quick announcements before we get started.
I want to thank Doug Schrems, Bill Richards and all the folks at Broadcasting Services, as
I always do, for use of the studio classroom over here in 145
Arts and Sciences.
I want to thank them too for involving us today in an experiment using some new tools
being developed by NPR
for live web streaming in archiving a video.
So we are being, we are being live streamed today and presumably there are some folks
watching this from their desks on campus.
So welcome to all of you as well.
Our most recent, our two most recent Campus Forums: the summer forum and last spring's
forum are available if you didn't have a chance to be here or if you want to relive the magical
moments you can go to youtube.com/webdevcafe
and you'll find the full archive of videos from those two
forums as well there.
Today's forum is entitled Considering Content Management Systems
and we have a wide variety of speakers today. I'll mention their names quickly and then
as they present they'll just come up one at a time and present and I'll come back up
at the very end.
We're gonna hear today first from Mike Van Putten from University Relations
who's going to talk about things to consider before deciding to adopt a content management
system.
And then we'll hear from folks presenting on a number of CMS applications
including Jason Noffsinger from Vet Med talking about plone.
Ian Hewlett
from Communication Arts and Sciences Social Media Research Lab,
he'll be discussing Drupal.
We'll hear about Joomla from Marc Hudson from Communication Arts and Sciences, Word Press
from James Kruth, and
two apps, CushyCMS and PageLime
from Mike Davis now with University Outreach and Engagement.
Finally our friend Mike Elledge
from MSU Usability/Accessibility Research and Consulting.
We'll say a few words about Content Management Systems and accessibility on the web.
Those are our speakers for the day.
After Mike Van Putten and Jason Noffsinger have had had a chance to speak,
at about 2:50 we're going to take a networking break out in the hallway, we've got Biggby coffee
and water bottles and and what not
and invite you to come out at that time and
network with one another, try to get to know one another
and see what we have to share.
I have two other really short, three other really short announcements. First
a Cascade server,
which is the CMS application being used for the MSU homesite,
will be presented. We didn't have a chance, we couldn't get the timing quite right
but the folks from the MSU web team were very interested in being able to present Cascade
as well and so a date will be set for that. It'll probably be a joint WebDev Cafe/University
Communicators meeting
and I'll keep everybody posted about the date of that as soon as it's announced. Now I want to thank
Deb Melcongi for being very helpful and arranging all of that for us.
The next announcement with regard to today's content
Craig Reed, is Craig Reed here?
Craig Reed. Craig Reed sent around a a series of comments on the email list regarding the gathering
of links about content management systems.
He wrote that he'd be happy to compile CMS resources
into a single document that we could share. If you all have pieces like that
please get them to Craig, we'll see what we can do with them from there. And I think you
Craig, for volunteering.
Last thing is an announcement about another event. My friend Vivek Joshi
with MSU Business Connect
wrote to the list to say that there's an event DemoCamp Lansing 2 to on December 14th.
The REO Art Alley on Washington Aveneue.
And there's more information about it, we recieved a message on the listserv about that
event it is coming up
if you're interested in it, democamplansing2.com is the place to put in an RSVP to attend.
And with that I welcome you all again and welcome up to the front Mike Van Putten.
