[Convening Community Through Stories]
So, entrepreneurialism, engagement and empathy
those are the three Es that we've settled upon
to really summarize what's going on with this event
and what we think it's happening in our region.
And I also think that, interestingly, this is the way to sum up
what storytelling is in the 21st century.
That we are taking enterprising approaches to engaging communities
and listening to it as well through this kind of
empathetic approach to connecting.
So, indeed I'd like to say that even as we acknowledge
that there are mass-media capitals in this country,
whether they'd be New York or Los Angeles,
that as we look at what makes our region
especially interesting and important,
that I believe that for the 21st century, Seattle can be the storytelling capital
of this country and I hope that's something
that'll come through as our speakers
share with you throughout the day.
So, today I hope you'll listen to our stories and see if you agree.
And I just want to reiterate that this event today
is about recognizing our community and convening the community.
I've heard from a number of our speakers over the last few days,
about how exciting they are to participate in this,
because it gives them the chance to finally connect with the people
they've always wanted to connect with.
And that includes the speakers and includes you.
So, because we are who we are -- by the way, my name is Hanson Hosein
and I'm the Director of the Master of Communication and Digital Media.
(Applause)
I should've introduced myself.
And we take social media storytelling
and new models of communication very seriously.
And lastly, before we begin our talks, I'd like to recognize how we came
to secure this wonderful venue here at the Pacific Science Center (PSC).
It came about late last year when I was giving a talk
to the Executive of the PSC about what we do in our programme.
And President CEO of the PSC, Bryce Seidl, said, "You know, we want to be part of this.
We believe that there's a strong link doing story telling and the sciences
and we would like to work with you in any way possible."
And that's why we are here.
We believe this is really emblematic of our community, to be here
in the Seattle Center area and at the Pacific Science Center.
So, I'd like to have a few words of welcome from Bryce.
(Applause)
Hanson Hosein: Bryce! Bryce Seidl: Thank you!
BS: What a pleasure for me to welcome you to PSC.
We were born 48 years ago at the World's Fair,
at a time when we were trying to imagine this community, we were trying to imagine
what the future would look like in terms of science and technology.
And I can bet you that almost nobody imagined
that we would've come so far in 48 years
as to have this room full of people, talking about the subjects we are
with the embedded technologies that make it possible.
Those of you that are local, probably think of us, largely,
as a place for kids and families, and that is core to our operations.
But, we've been building over the last several years
a wide variety of programmes for adults, a whole series of programmes
around the theme of science and society, trying to help people understand
the relationships of science to our lives and to our culture, where we're going.
Programmes like this are extraordinarily valuable to the community.
And we are honoured to have you in this room with us,
and those of you all around the world that are watching this streaming,
welcome again to PSC.
Thank you Hanson!
(Applause)
