You see this every day. Traffic is at a standstill. Congestion in both the Stevens Creek Corridor
and the 280 / 880 interchange area is an everyday occurrence.
This congestion typically occurs during morning and evening commutes, and on weekends.
During the holiday season this area backs up even more as shoppers are making their way
to and from Westfield Valley Fair and Santana Row.
The 280 / 880 Stevens Creek Boulevard Project will begin construction in late fall 2012,
and is estimated to be completed in 2015.
The purpose of this project is to improve safety and traffic flow on the freeways and local roadways
in the vicinity of the 880 / Stevens Creek Boulevard interchanges.
The current clover leaf design is over 50 years old and needs to be upgraded
in order to meet today's design standards.
Modifications to the 280 / 880 interchanges will be made to improve traffic flow in the surrounding areas.
Access points to and from the freeways will be modified, but not removed.
Here is what the interchange looks like before construction.
And now, you can see what the new configuration will look like when the project is completed.
When you are traveling from northbound 280 to northbound 880,
you will have a direct ramp connector and no longer have to merge with the traffic exiting to Stevens Creek.
If you are travelling northbound on 280 or northbound on 880 and want to exit at Stevens Creek,
you will use the existing ramp that has been realigned and widened.
When you exit southbound 880 to Stevens Creek, you will have an option to exit directly onto Stevens Creek.
You will also have the option of taking a new dedicated exit to access North Monroe Street.
If you are driving eastbound or westbound on Stevens Creek,
you will be able to access southbound 17 and southbound 280 at a new ramp.
If you are driving westbound on Stevens Creek and want to go northbound on 880,
you will be able to turn right onto a realigned ramp.
If you are driving eastbound on Stevens Creek and want to go northbound on 880,
you will be able to turn right onto a new loop ramp.
This project will widen the Stevens Creek Bridge and accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists
with wider sidewalks and new bike lanes, along with new decorative bridge railings.
To mitigate noise impacts to nearby residential neighborhoods,
sound walls will be constructed on the east and west sides of 880.
The construction of the project will happen in phases.
VTA anticipates temporary traffic disruptions through the construction area,
and appreciates your patience and cooperation during this time.
VTA will provide additional information to describe activities as they occur,
and will inform the community throughout the project.
