it being Friday a of course we start
Darfur star was senator Bernie Sanders our brunch with Bernie our and
centers enters a quick across the big news is that nelson mandela
died yesterday passed away yesterday you were there for his
inaugural pardon my not greeting you had better 30 ernie
great to have you with us would agree with that guy I was South Africa
I in 1994 Robert very well
are was an extraordinary day not only for the people South Africa put the
people the world when I was mayor of Burlington
we were involved and divestment campaign is
people were all over the house country in a fact that probably a pretty out and
a runner up
are for what was remarkable day a
in 1994 today you know we celebrate are
an extraordinary life clearly 103
outstanding people twentieth century somebody who had an impact not only on
his own country of South African
beating them but majority rule in ending apartheid
but I think also have a presence
a an impact on the entire world
and struggle against racism and while
galleries clearly continues to exist we have come
a long way hand what are the reasons is
are the brilliant some the charisma
whisper of love Nelson Mandela yeah yeah
really is and then in other news here in the united states I just want to say one
more word on it just just stop and think
a man who spent 26 years of his life
not only in prison up but at hard labor
came close to dying in prison and then come and help
have become the president of this country Robert Rotarian
the talks about perseverance and determination
incredible courage of there's a lot Tom
a terms what's going on right now are clearly a lot
that is going on congress said it reconvenes next week the house is in
session right now
arm the issue that to will be staring us right in the face
strike the end are the absurdity of
sequestration but doing that or a way that you spare
remains to be seen are what if anything is going to happen
are to my view fabric but it'll this is
know what you have so much wealth and income inequality in America
or you have a middle class disappearing in the wealthiest 2
people to a family wealth and one out of four major profitable corporations
paying
nothing in federal taxes are clearly the way if you go forward with the new
budget
is to protect the interests of the middle class and working families
lower-income people and ask the wealthy a large corporation to begin paying
their fair share of taxes
are partially my Republican colleagues to
not to agree with that are there are
vision is to cut back on food stamps to cut back on Social Security Medicare
Medicaid unemployment compensation
arbitration education you name the issue
the impact working low-income families and the middle class and they want to
cut cut cut it
and continue to give huge tax breaks to people who don't need it
so that's really what strugglers we'll see how it plays out
a this week but it speaks to the are poor or rich right now open the
to bring people together to develop a budget which works for the vast majority
of our people
and not just for the wealthier and multinational corporate
are in that regard there's been some really interesting
work hand after taking place all over this country are in terms of the fast
food industry because what we talk about the economy we've got some good news
today
some figures that unemployment is going down
are but it is still much much much to heart
family now it's seven-percent but in real terms over
thirteen-percent if you can help those people who have given up looking for
work
have people working part time but i wanna work full-time
so are you looking at still very very high unemployment
rates nationally in a particular state communities
topics as much higher than that arm what a great economic problems that we are
facing is that they have
is that most of the new jobs will be created all the way to drop their pop
art drops
we have a whole lot of folks working in the restaurant industry working in the
fast food industry
who are according to render stay low wages and I really want to applaud
are the incredible kurchatov these fast food workers many of them young people
I'll have the clerks two
stand up to you know what seven dollars and twenty five cents an hour is not a
living wage
aren't many level working can't even get 40 hours a week to get a 30 hours a week
they getting
virtually no better patrol so they're hoping of sleep aFAIK
to raise the minimum wage to at least
1010 an hour which is also not a minimum wage what would be
a huge step forward in pack some 30 million Americans with CA
wage increase arm and were also simultaneously
are working are to try to get the president
to a but taking make an executive order
are to mandate that any contractor
federal contractor protector receives federal money pay at least 10,000
for now we have many contractors receive federal money
or whether they're providing surfaces or in some cases even manufacturing
were paying substantially lower than that so part of the effort
that we're trying to wage their to raise
arm the minimum wage 280 arm
politic which and furthermore we have
recently had some I does a lot of discussion on health care the possible
so there's no but
are my own view is third at the end of the day we're gonna have to
if we're gonna provide help get every man woman child to do it in a cost
effective way
we need a Medicare for All single-payer system which is the only way that I know
could provide cost-effective healthcare everybody is a right
are in this country are the absurdity so the current health care system are
beyond belief
we have millions of people walking at the primary health care
are of I love walking into emergency rooms
to get their health care are which is the most expensive
former primary health care how they do that because they don't have
our primary health care that they can access other whether the birth control
we have in my own state over much is dealing with the right now we have a
shortage of dentists
in particular areas of the state capitol crisis going on all the
country our people can't find affordable dental care
issue we're working on are we have a crisis that we can't even
educate get out to the field russia's in the United States a berkeley here we are
as a nation
spending almost twice as much as any other country on earth
we have enough doctors especially where we didn't have enough nurses
we don't have enough that the I yeah we end up a $48 million
a Americans or a church so arm
what the good news that we've seen recently is the establishment
$350 million dollar I
grant from the federal government of 236
new community health centers are throughout the country
including three by on Flickr for martin indyk become a strong believer
but if you talk about a revolution to primary health care because other people
with access to affordable
health care dental care a mental health counseling low-cost prescription drugs
are the federally qualified community health programs certainly want to be
promenade ways that we can a
great that revolution to make sure that everybody in this country has access to
proper healthcare
which will in the long run actually save a substantial sums of money
our proposal probably problem carmike
each other right now I'm curious bring your on the you're on the
the committee that's working on resolving the budget and you you
mentioned that briefly
but eighteen republicans just signed a letter and super early today to john
bainer
saying that they want a clean CR arms you know
novice other to be maybe you can answer never come back I'm sorry I missed my
time
guns okay we'll be right back to senator Bernie Sanders
and also by the way I are second third hours the second hour live from South
Africa professor Patrick bond will be with us
an Arthur our bill bill Fletcher for president transafrica form
will be with us about else mental to crop
this is the Thom Hartmann program and don't forget bernie's website is Sanders
dot center dot goblin you can sign up for his newsletter the Bernie buzz there
it's great
and welcome back
on Briana bass bass in a question very very
quick it is do you think the john bainer its gonna let the steeper years
for cement another government shutdown that's what they're calling for their
letter
but I don't think that anyone those Piazza
I will tell you I think the republicans many republicans understand
I'll that they're shutting down
of the government tonight paychecks somebody workers surprising people of
the government services they have paid for
really backfired on them so I think you have a possible Republican
21 said that is not a particularly good trucking go okay
sold big a phone call sir put it was okay steve watching free speech TV on
DirecTV in Simi Valley Calif you are on your senator Sanders
hi senator Sanders I'll
my issue with your the federal judiciary
I now that we've broken attacks
up the republican obstruction which so opposed to you know
as you know we have sixty-five patients use on the federal courts yup I would I
wanna know
is do you know whether majority leader we did the president I really do
everything they can to
to really are making efforts to
to stall 65 vacancies I think it is fair to say Steve
that arm the process is going to move forward as quickly as possible
are right now the immediate concern that we have is that in the second most
important quote
in the United States the DC Court of Appeals there are three vacancies
how what our republican friends have unbelievably will argue about the
qualifications
all the nominees but try to commit their argument is
cheap maybe we Kat report
down by three people that is their argument
are I think those nominations are gonna be taken care of
in the very near future and I hope very much your point is well taken a lot of
vacancies out there
are that we fill those seats now okay
Joan in New York City oh I
hand Joan yep Huron you're listening to be a reality which is a commercial break
let me come back to you in just a second
and Zachery age progress days after you're on the air center centers
scout the folded like all Senate center so I wanted to ask is there a chance we
can
Provost some changes to the farm bill to actually subsidize
organic products like organic milk said the regular one
well exactly good question I think the reviews are not on that bill
about all the committees I don't have all the details are probably but I think
there is language
in the bill and has been in recent years to give a greater emphasis
for organic are farming
are there is a growing
concern in this country about the quality of the food
that we are reading I could tell you that in the state of Vermont on any
given Saturday during the summer time because I might be very large farmers
markets a lot of the products being sold
all organic so to answer your question yes I believe there is language in there
clearly we've got to do a lot more what are the issues that I have been working
on
is to make sure that product in the United States theoretically modified
organisms RRP labeled
people have two choices whether or not they want to buy ga-ga more food
or not we're gonna stay on on that issue was well this year aLEC has got now
model legislation they're pushing out the states and not just that but also
country of origin labelling
right by employees my surprise yeah yeah this is on their their new agenda they
just got leaked by the Guardian David yes but
senator Bernie Sanders was taking your calls will be right back with more
burning
I'll more senior senator Evans
when minutes past the hour laundromat summer been here with you senator Bernie
Sanders on the line with us is our brunch with Bernie hour and Bruce and
will
Wilmette Illinois you are on your senator centers the
you Bruce small
okay joan in New York City John you're on the air sander Sanders
oh hi hello herself and is I
my question I'm I'm wondering I would like to have a progress report
on a vermont single-payer but first I want to make sure we're talking about
the same thing cuz I've heard
people sometimes refer to medicare as a single-payer system which it is not
I've discovered much to my chagrin just how expensive medicare is
for the beneficiary I mean 20 percent you've got a
you've got to buy medicare and the party
it becomes extremely expensive and so I don't call that single pair today to do
a pair sister to me
single-payer system is exactly that means there is one pair
you pay your taxes that's it your obligation is finished
and then the government pays the bills whenever you
get anything done you know medically so if that works for months means by single
pair
throwing John about the call I can tell you
is that are however you want to find it pirate sleeve me not going to be easy
for one state
to be the first in the nation to do it a lot of Parliament have to be overcome
are not just for the insurance companies with the federal government with a
researcher and so forth
your definition of what a single payer system
if about yes in my view exactly correct and that's what I believe
are I think compact every American should have the opportunity to walk into
any doctor's office they want
go to the hospital but they want and not having to worry about bills topper that
they responded by
tax dollars that's what a single-payer is about whether Vermont will be able to
achieve that or not
I don't know are but I do hope that we will be a leader in the country
are you moving is closed to that as we possibly can
are in making sure that all of our people are covered as a right
are that we have one pair of the Phils
ashes in Palatine Illinois
you are on the air sander Sanders ashes I
thanks karen thanks senator senator taking my call I'm one after defender
do you think America effecting from a
a manufacturing economy and more two-way
service economy now well I don't think you'll appreciate what I kinda gotta
factor
over the last many many years we have lost
a very substantial on
number all fav factories in america my recollection is
could be wrong that I think in the last ten years so it was something like fifty
or sixty thousand manufacturing plants
are as well is millions have decent paying jobs for folks who are working at
those plants
so I don't like this watch debate about fact that manufacturing and
manufacturing
drops are a much less significant part of the overall economy
to the many of those jobs are replaced by low-paying
are service industry jobs and how we rebuild
manufacturing are and make sure that those jobs
pay workers 87 wage with decent benefits
is one of the great challenges of our country but I have a hard time believing
that you can be a strong I
economy if you're not producing a product that people
utilize that we cannot continue to be a society importing
are from China and all about low wage countries
we've got to stop producing products ourselves James in Silverlake indiana
you're on the air senator Sanders
good estimates centers tried it
I like to know how come you know is not the republican party and the Tea Party
in fact
well I'll tell you why James arm
I don't bark members of the party but I knocked those people who are funding the
Tea Party
because their priorities are really
not what the overwhelming majority of Americans believe it or what
are we do our folks like the Koch brothers fun
for help for the party in fun a lot of different organizations support the Tea
Party
these guys who alternately 10 and
Social Security are they want to transform Medicare away
are probably successful program that has been
into a voucher program the one massive cuts in medicaid
in education are in nutrition are they want to abolish the concept
of the minimum way to the white people in this country working
in certain parts of America for three or four bucks an hour
they want to eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency go back to the days
I want large corporations could pollute
our a role and then a war Arora they want to give more tax breaks for the
wealthiest people in this country
so james also just a few other reasons
why I should have strong disagreement with the party
but I think I having said that I think that if many members of the Tea Party
many or more working-class people
actually understood what the people are upset the Tea Party
were saying argue that the party itself which angel those people would leave the
party
i think is fast and how our folks like James
one I'm guessing given the nature is question was a cheap is a
considers himself a tea partier probably think that by having
in a smaller government and lower taxes that's something that's good for them
can you use nuclear think I mean we've seen polls
where the vast majority of members of the Tea Party or people who
are submitted to the party do not believe in cuts in social security and
medicare and medicaid
current which doesn't surprise me but many people at the party don't even know
what their own leadership is proposed and I think if you know maybe the best
service we could do was tell the Tea Party members
the Koch brothers all are the people of under the Tea Party what they call this
post
the party people do not believe you cut social security to give tax breaks for
billionaires
fly-in I would be quite surprised somebody like James
our group about now yeah it really is remarkable
bernie we have just a little less than a minute before the break well let me just
say bro
you know before the break going to be a factor too maybe story today about as
Nelson Mandela and think that you know in these tough times in America they are
very very tough for so many people
are the you know I think we can learn something from the perseverance
the determination all somebody like for mandela
are so this is the guy who was at the way
to jail 26 years Hill living there aren't a lot of horrendous
conditions but as a result of a worldwide movement the Holy South Africa
for all over the world
our people putting pressure that was a project with people organized
to band together there's no limit to what could happen yet to rule
demonstration here
pasta call for getting getting getting active
part senator Bernie Sanders with the Sanders that said that got his website
will be back with more your calls for burning right after this
you're listening to but Tom Hartman program
call 866 987 thon
any general bir his website is Sanders that senate that GAO
here
got a large am having a year job want to buy or senator Bernie Sanders well as
just a reminder at the top in the next
our in our second our professor Patrick bond director the Center for civil
society in Durban South Africa
who worked with a Nelson Mandela will be with us
as a guest and in our third hour bill Fletcher the former president
transafrica form also worked with us Nelson L
mental will be with us guest bernie welcome back
we will help and %uh let's pick up some phone calls here
Kurt in Saratoga Springs New York you're on the air senator Sanders
senator Sanders I thank you very much for speaking with you mister hartman
thank you I thanks for taking my call
my question is this: I'm should we fight crazy with a little crazy have our own
since it doesn't look like the Tea Party is going away anytime soon
to progressive Democrats Korean organize coalition
a far less progressive Democrats to counteract a tea party
well are you know I think thano
what progresses should be doing is blocking the truth are they should be
analyzing
up what's going on in this country which has more more wealth and income
inequality
peep toe ring at the crisis of global warming are the highest
level of people living in poverty poor people living in poverty today than
ever before just talking about the troop but being cut off
beginning you know I think one of the problems with the democrats are much
more quote unquote
reasonable a much nicer are focused and then our republican friends left off
are but I think the Democrats have got to start connecting in a way that they
have not done
to working-class people not just upper middle class people
have to start connecting with working-class people stand up for their
rights
are I think we can have for
the huge impact in transforming the American economy
I every poll that I have thinker you have to be totally radical battle for
the american people think
and by the way it's gone only progresses republicans as well
they understand we need to create millions of jobs
that is unacceptable for real on a plane with for young people to be close to
twenty percent
so we've got to do that we gotta fight for that
without a fight to raise the minimum wage we gotta fight to
transform our energy system we had a fight for gender equality
I in in this country so the question is
family got connecting to ordinary people knowing
allowing them to know you are fighting for them
get them involved in the struggle those think we have to do i mean
again today with celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela
and there was a heckuva lot are to learn from his
life in terms of vision and in terms of organizing at the grassroots level
Edward in Chicago you're on your senator centers
yeah time senator Sanders of senator Sanders Yesu question about the %uh
federal extended unemployment benefits
I see that are not funded past the end of the year and once again
congress is getting ready to take Crysis occasion which means they won't be back
till January
do you know if there's any attempt to fund these extended benefits before they
go on vacation or a drug deal when I was there certainly is
harm a good are by drawing 31
other senators just today are in demanding the congress
preserve federal unemployment rates for another year
see your point is well taken and I can report to you thirty two of us
in the united states senate have said that we have got to extend unemployment
benefits
but I think the chances are it'll happen artistic I mean it's you know it's
a particular shot at it
you know I again the the issue here our republican friends I think I have
learned a lesson from the last shot down
are and when you don't extend unemployment benefits when you leave
working families high and dry within in many cases just very little income
comment
are and that becomes a a
it negative for the economy those folks about spending money
you know I think we got a shot at and we're gonna work very very *** that
Seth at Blacksburg Virginia
you're on the air senator Sanders my brain how are you
them I worked on the right to campaign I don't
arm and I worked on poverty issues for last 20 years
I wanna see if this resonates with %um the economy I have a new plan
I'm and and racks for the last time we should support education
and work that people love to do i'm for the greatest needs a society
person in harmony with nature I what's really thought about that
well this is well I think arm I think when we talk
we can't separate our discussion
up the economy arm
from a the issue with the environment
global warming are what the scientific community tall sources the greatest
crisis
facing this planet is global warming are that it is quite possible that the
temperature of the earth will go up from five degrees 10 degrees centigrade
by the end of this entry with cataclysmic artist dangers
a an impact all over this world some
cities and communities were really going on the war
I increase crop cutting back on the ability of farmers to grow food
such a report from also any discussion on the economy has got to take that into
consideration
so the broader effort to your question services number one i think we can
create jobs by transforming
our energy system and we know how to do that we know how to break our dependence
on fossil fuels the alternatives are out there
staring us in the face we are beginning to move forward
not rapidly and often when we begin to default go forward
when we produced our wind and solar manufactured here in the United States
when we move aggressively in energy efficiency will remove
he pops into your available at the biomass what you do is you
cut greenhouse gas emissions and you also create jobs in this country protect
the ball and related
when you talk about the economy despite just started just making sure
that everybody has health care is a bright
it is to make sure making sure that the jobs that are created
are paying people like a living wage it make sure that we're taking care of the
elderly
are and making sure that their retirement are all about quality time
about their
looking forward to it not trying to get by on for ten to fifteen thousand
dollars a year or less ok
when you look at the economy you have got to look at environmental and energy
issues
you have to look at the social safety net we have the potential now with all
of the technology
that he is out there to create a nation where all of our people have at least a
minimum standard of living
and where we are as you indicated living in harmony
with nature and not destroying the planet
Rick in Milwaukee Wisconsin on your senator centers
yes sir not a week goes by
were in there isn't a new revelation a bar
are assault our fourth amendment
rights against searches and seizures
by the National Security Agency
and now there are certain new stuff coming out about the FBI and the CIA
interconnected with the National Security Agency
causing these kinds of assault causing a gigantic surveillance state
were with kinda measures could the Senate take
and that you would support so we can start to our
Rain Affair will work thanks very much I think you
present the case very very well
har every every week we open the paper in this another revelation
outrageous revelation about for the
a this recall that the surveillance state
are so that the we are learning that the NSA and other intelligence agencies to
where we are
know the website we're going to that all four phone calls are being filed
I Emperor record are
and relief not what a free society is about so I think work
to answer your question I honestly believe in a few sister before I think
you have
an agency that is absolutely out of control
all I think they have very little understanding of what civil liberties in
our constitutional rights are about
now that's my view I'm not going to tell you that as a majority view in the
senate I'm sure it is not
or is it a majority view in the house are short term but you'll probably see
is from
legislation trying to crates some limitations
are putting restrictions on what they're doing but I don't think it's gonna go
far enough
Arctic what we should be the banding is that the american people
are standoff and talk about are what a free society
is about and it is not one where we are being monitored in surveyed
are every day of the week so quick to point is
well-taken is an issue I feel very strongly about watch wall-e I think than
virtually almost anybody are into said it there will be some legislation
are you will probably not go as far as should
we just got a rally the american people what is interesting about this issue
work
if this is an issue that a is such as progressives
feel strongly about it you can find some conservatives on as conservatives for
all the right reasons
if you do not like big-government
man you do not like are what the end as a historic so I hope we can bring some
coalitions together to make some changes
Monica in Raleigh North Carolina you're on the air center centers
hi are I was wondering
I net there was just talk about this big
exodus from Alec and arms
i was just wondering you know we always talk about how like
but I was wondering where did all those people who left aliquot
to is there another group that we should be concerned about old monocle
there are dozens of groups coming but we are learning is
such as the Koch brothers it's Google if a whole lotta big-money interests
what pouring money into organization
after organization after organization are
and so when you turn on the TV tonight you see somebody from the heritage
foundation of the cato foundation
are the american enterprise foundation you know these are M
corporately funded by playing
think tanks if they have Coopers Beach TV here is a heavy rainfall you drive
right now
and make it is the old uncle sam poser said from only one hundred when you hear
it
trying to get more conservative judges are they are
but how it does impact on state legislatures all over the country
on you know you have does does
doesn't right-wing organizations
all who are very active and well-funded by big money
will be back with more senator Sanders in just a moment it's our brunch with
Bernie are here on the Thom Hartmann program senator Bernie Sanders taking
your calls and by the way I
Sony's website Sanderstead South Africa
you're listening to the Thom Hartmann program
visit Thom Hartmann dot com for audio and video archive
Nelson Mandela said overcoming poverty is not a task a charity is an active
just it's like slavery apartheid
poverty is not natural it is man made
welcome back
and Clifford in Ishpeming Michigan washing free speech TV on the Dish
satellite TV network you are on your senator Sanders
dole yessir hope
suffered you're on the air %uh yeah okay
are yes I would like to know what bernice a are
answer would be talks artists it happened like we made
we passed a bill to go back to work stand up to them not against work
are but the money this post we did you know that was a seem to save money
yet the spent billions of dollars on bridges
send I damsel that's fine makes jobs
the same thing went back here in early Michigan
when the past the I on employment law and a writer on that wish you could you
sell raw milk
I mean these are things I have absolutely nothing to do with each other
and why can't we have tweeting we always put that is
him that's a very good question you talk about the writers for offer on
legislation
a very poor way to do business like a fun fair to the american people
I doesn't allow the american people to get engaged in the debate
of the usual that issue I have to tell you take you to the
functionality of the united states senate and how little legislation gets
passed
are and if no legislation gets passed
sometimes would be appropriately a writer on further we get something done
but the point is an ideal excuse me from just boarding your question
it does take us to are
the functionality also the Senate and how
were truly every every important piece of legislation
gets held up I and objected to and require 60 votes
which makes it very hard for us to do anything if we had majority rule
in the center right now 51 votes talk
are was what was needed to pass legislation
we could move forward on jobs legislation we have proposed
Republicans would object now they need sixty votes I think I put the majority
leader
of what he did in terms of the so-called nuclear option
are in terms of presidential nomination that is absurd
that this nomination to be held up and held up and held up but I think we've
got a corporate
so I think for the answer to the wider problem is to be able to produce
legislation
general before get a reasonable debate get amendment
let the american people get engaged let's go forward right now we're really
are really hamstrung in terms our ability
to do that but your point is right we should be focusing on issue after issue
let the american people know what's going on and often that is not the case
town bernie we have just a minute until the next break on
do you do you think that there's any possibility that myth that as senate
Senator Reid will
expand that and and was the blowback as bad as
was expected now I don't think tho you get on the ball where it will go back up
from a comes from our republican friends I hate
we want the right to prevent the United States Senate
from doing anything we wanna prevent any action
taking place to protect working people we desperately command
that right to most americans think that makes up the Gulf
both attack I'm not sure the most amino most americans when they hear the word
from a post like somebody getting up there
and talking it off work and I was appointed mister that happens very very
rarely I support that
what the filibuster means today if somebody saying
I object to preceding on debating this issue getting a vote on this issue
and needing 60 votes we don't have sixty votes so you can have one federal 17 up
literally bringing
the United States that is cool there then it is all but by definition
the house little ok we can pass legislation the government the whole
that is not how you could function in the 21st victory in my view
10 minutes before they are we'll be right back with more bernie
and but somebody centers answering your questions to
do
the match on here with you it's a buncha bernie our celebration honors on the
line with us and Charles in Bellevue Washington watching us on the ability of
a cable system and free speech TV you're on your senator Sanders
thank you just seriousness I have the proposal
for shutting down everything
that we're doing through nasser to go to mars there is no point to that
militarily economically
reconfigured nasa for maintaining and replacing herself satellites
period and take their money we're spending on sending satellites and
people to mars and use that for
infrastructure and social services here on earth and
well our local agree with you trolls clearly
a you know we have three major a
infrastructure are crisis in America roads bridges
rail system indeed up massive repair no question about it
but I think a the research
that goes into space exploration
ends up having art end up developing new technology and does have an impact on
the economy because of some kind of
are aspirations out there is also are now arguing that
human needs right now or more importantly to create jobs here on
a it rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure and so forth but I could
I would not be in favor
up for ending the year at nasa program Howard
in North Hills Calif you're on the air sander Sanders call it and listen as I
love you
I got a quick question 3
hello are lol E 0
area powered the
I howard got a problem with this phone system will low
11 calling back I'll yeah I and II think II
I the shame caught it by David in MEM are on neck New York you're on your
senator Sanders
II Bernie Sanders I up to 20 questions
one is arm has anybody done any study are presented anything about
to taxes on labor for instance to greenspan commission per fire
to him for coming chairman of the Federal Reserve hiked
arm social security taxes for my percent
15 percent and the as roll call you pointed out that
no question in short it with this change the PRI arm and Germany have a
pay-as-you-go system
it's also cell factors increased in the nineteen seventies us also attacks on
labor
and property taxes which have been reduced because a sales taxes
depreciation a mortgage interest 38 create
that leverage or debt deflation for the working class something I wanted to ask
is why work
the travel waiver on the floor is 15 to 18
sense and John the dollar and I heard which I believe now that
that the or worker because of the high top all inputs
always only cost each extra dollar and now we're losing jobs overseas
so are structure in question is history have a tax policy that helps workers
as well as capital controls which you also suggested right
combat but David erased a a lot of
a lot of issues a you know when we talk about tax policy I think first principle
i think is fair
and right now we're living in a country where you have
multinational corporations making billions of dollars in some cases thing
nothing in a given year
in federal taxes collectively corporate contribution to federal taxes is much
less
that it used to be and i think is David is applying that mean for the middle
class and working families
are picking up the burden thirdly when you talk about tax policy wanna be
you want to use tax policy is an incentive say good things happening in
the country
including the creation of decent paying jobs right now in some cases
are we have tax policy which almost encourage
companies to shut down are and move abroad
so within both context
David fairness are using tax policy to create decent paying
jobs well I think this is a deeply fundamental overhaul
no question heart my mind on that Dennis in Waterbury center Vermont
you're on the air center centers yes good afternoon senator Sanders
my question is is with the year recent balloting
that net national budget we just got word
p airlines safety taxes gonna go from
two dollars and fifty cents to go boy to five dollars
now I Adam airline employees
with an airline that flies into the brunt in international airport is
if that tax goes through that could affect the traveling public
are causing the traveling public another $750 million dollars
arm the you know the traveling public can't afford any more taxes
on their airfare the first it now gonna happen people
not traveling a court tennis wanna says as one the traveling public five dollars
a ticket I don't think it's going to cause me not to
live at bring you take your protagonist but data his work for trying to do here
Irish the benefits will not ask people for a month I was just open the
Northeast Kingdom think jobs for what talking to people
yesterday call on the Theatre on the head start program in talking about
what's going on with low income people at our program has been cut
kids are used to be in the program in vermont all over this country are no
longer in the program
you have a meals-on-wheels program which provides food for
very needy senior citizens often living at the above a dark road
program has been cut education programs
have been cut nutrition programs have been cut
now if I had my druthers what I would do
as i've mentioned five minutes ago is that the wealthiest people this country
to start paying their fair share of taxes
in the supporter taxi from that exist in the Cayman Islands and
elsewhere we losing about a hundred billion dollars a year
are in revenue I would cut military spending cuts spending
more than above the rest of the world combined there are ways
to go forward are protect the interests of
ordinary americans are the also in the kids and the horrible
unfortunately we have a political party called the Republican Party
in Washington right now what do not of that fact I want
even more tax breaks for the rich so there are negotiations going on
and a this 3 L Y tax that you're talking about
is one of the options that is being looked at if the proposed for adoption
is that the best option
no are is in general the folks who travel
on airplanes higher-income let other people probably
are so it's not the worst part certainly not the best option but we will see what
the
committee heads up with a lot more about that in a few days spca bernie just a
half a minute but not even that much sorry
you timed it perfectly senator Sanders thank you so much for being with us
supply please take it
I
