EVERY DAY, IT SEEMS TECHNOLOGY IS BECOMING
A BIGGER PART OF OUR LIVES. AND NO WHERE IS THAT MORE EVIDENT THAN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
MEMPHIS LIBRARIES. "The information world and industry
is changing very rapidly. The introduction of technology and the great capabilities that
it has added to what we can do makes a big difference in the way we provide library services
and information access. " WHILE THE LIBRARY'S MAIN GOAL REMAINS THE SAME..."Offering resources
to people to help them find information."...THE METHODS OF FINDING THAT INFORMATION HAVE CHANGED.
"Students can go online, they can renew books online." "Technology has changed a lot of
things, the way we do our work, the way we catalog books. There is no longer a card catalog,
our catalog is electronic." "As the university begins to offer more of its curriculum online,
we in turn need to be able to provide more of the library and information resources online."
BUT DESPITE ALL THESE TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS, THE REAL STRENGTH OF THE LIBRARIES REMAINS
THE PEOPLE WHO WORK THERE. "The people that work in this library are wonderful. They are
committed to the university, to the students, and to the information profession." "I love
customer service. I love interacting with people. I think that is the most rewarding
part of it." "The way that we do business, the way that we operate in constantly changing.
And so the Library faculty and staff have to constantly reengineer, re-create their
skills, their expertise in order to keep up with the new ways to provide library services
and support." AND WHILE THEY ARE HELPING THE CURRENT GENERATION OF STUDENTS, THE EMPLOYEES
STILL APPRECIATE HOW THE LIBRARIES HAVE HELPED THEM. "The Library was very instrumental in
my research for my senior research paper. I found all of my information here in the
electronic databases." "There has been a growing process over the time period that I have been
here. And I think as you grow, you aspire to do greater things." NOT ONLY IS THE TECHNOLOGY
OF THE LIBRARY CHANGING, ALSO THE LAYOUT HAS BEEN UPDATED. "You started from the real quiet
library, now to an open environment, and it is also a market place this library has become."
"We have a 24 hour learning commons area which is available to faculty, staff, and students
once they provide their ID." "We now have computers distributed throughout the library
on all four floors to allow library users to have ready access to our online resources,
the print resources, the informational professionals that they need all in one place." ALL OF THESE
CHANGES HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO KEEP THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS LIBRARIES FOCUSED ON THE NEEDS
OF ITS USERS. "Being able to make a difference in the learning process of students of all
ages and in all disciplines is really a plus from the perspective of the library."\
