Hi, I’m Emile, and I'm co-director of SHAC, Student Health Advisory Committee here on campus.
We serve as a liason between Campus Health and the student body.
Hi, I’m Jaclyn, the other co-director of SHAC.
Hey, I’m Ben, and I'm a member of SHAC.
Hi, I'm Ralphiee, and I'm a Health Promotions and Preventive Services intern.
Ralphiee: And we would like to welcome you to Counseling and Psych Services, also known as CAPS, the place that provides mental health services for University of Arizona students.
We’ll be giving you a short tour of facilities, and explaining what services are provided at CAPS. C'mon, let's go!
Jaclyn: CAPS is located on the third floor of Campus Health in the southeast corner of the building. This is a place on campus where you can go if you need to
to talk things out, get low-cost counseling, psychiatric evaluations and medication, figure out how to help a friend who may be having emotional troubles, or attend a support or therapy group.
Ben: We are staffed by licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health counselors, in addition to student interns supervised by CAPS staff. You will be greeted by our friendly and helpful reception staff.
For more specific information, please visit our website at * http://www.health.arizona.edu/webfiles/caps.htm
Emile: In order for students to be able to perform at their best, the University knows that students need to pay attention to their physical, emotional and mental well being,
CAPS provides individual and group counseling, couples counseling if both partners are students, and also provides outreach and consultation services to the entire campus community.
Jaclyn: Some of the groups offered regularly are Meditation, Learning to Cope, Walking for Wellness, LGBTQA Support, and Making Peace with Body and Food.
Students can come in to talk about anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship and family concerns, substance abuse, compulsive behaviors, grief and loss, or simply needing help adjusting.
CAPS also has a satellite clinic at McHale Athletic Center.
Ben: We have found that meeting someone face to face for the first time helps students feel more comfortable about seeking help, and helps us to assess the specific needs of the student and how best to meet them.
This is accomplished by a short visit with a counselor, called a triage session, lasting anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, in which the student describes what’s going on, gets support, and is offered options for help.
The student may be seen for treatment at CAPS for short-term or very specific issues, for psychiatric assessment and/or medication management, or be referred to other community resources.
Sometimes students prefer referrals for reasons of convenience or finances. To be seen in Triage, just walk in any weekday between 9 AM and 3:30 PM.
Ralphiee: By the end of the triage visit, most people at least have some choices for their next steps. Further appointments may be scheduled after that first meeting.
That could be with a CAPS professional, or someone else in the community.
We often refer to community providers when you need more services than we provide, services that we don’t have, need to be evaluated for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or wish to utilize a private insurance plan. For more information on ADHD please refer to that section on our website.
Jaclyn: Sometimes it’s difficult for students to call or come in to CAPS for various reasons: they may feel ashamed or embarrassed that they need help for mental or emotional problems, they may fear that their confidentiality will be compromised, or they may simply not have the daytime hours free.
Ben: If you are not sure that you need help, there are many online assessments that you can take on our website, including Depression, Anxiety, Alcohol, Eating Disorders, and Suicidality, as well as other online resources and links. You can also call the CAPS phone number for more specific information.

Jaclyn: We hope you feel welcomed and supported during your time here as a Wildcat, and we hope to see you soon in CAPS.
All: Bye!
