Student success starts with the students. It’s their effort, drive and determination
that sees them reach their goals, but students need the programs, resources and support staff
to be there when they need them. And they need them to fit into their already hectic
schedules as they shuttle between school, work and home life.
At the newly expanded Learning Center at College of the Canyons, we’re ready to help students
reach their educational goals. The TLC now offers state of the art areas for tutoring
and academic support workshops that can serve up to 30,000 students annually.
The primary mission of the Learning Center is to provide a comfortable easily accessible
location for tutoring. The service is free to students, and is offered in a variety of
subjects such as Math, English and CIT. The center offers seven enclosed study rooms,
which are designed for students to study with classmates and peers. Each room is equipped
with a flat-screen computer/television monitor, a web camera for presentation practice, an
electrical outlet pod, an HDMI cable hookup for personal laptops, and a portable whiteboard.
Instructors can also record lectures and class activities using the audio/visual “class
capture” technology found in one of TLC classrooms.
Access to computers and technology is vitally important for student success. To make that
happen, College of the Canyons added dozens of workstations to TLC. Available computers
now total 130 throughout the facility. On the second floor resides an “information
commons” of sorts, an area devoted entirely to computer access, with individual and group
workstations that are laptop-friendly.
The expansion also allowed the library to grow, including expanding the library’s
holdings of both books and e-books, doubling the number of computer workstations, and the
adding of a special collections room for holding and displaying of historical documents.
The overall design of TLC emphasized it as a place where students can relax and focus
on schoolwork, and meeting their educational goals. Comfortable couches, lots of table
space, quiet rooms and soft lighting has created an atmosphere that students have embraced
as home away from home.
And students have embraced the expansion of both the Library and TLC in droves. Through
the fall of 2013, TLC has served more than 7,000 students, an increase of 39% over the
previous semester.
With this expansion, College of the Canyons is primed and ready to meet the needs of an
ever-growing student population.
